I think the same review (tanihwa review maybe?) that mentioned the shifting with a servo motor under full power on the assembly line also mentioned that you could preload a shift and it would click in when you let off the pedals. That doesn't work with electronic shifting though, just like regular shifting, with a cable you have a lot more feel.

As gor spacing out or delaying shifts, again it's like letting up on the pedals, it's just good practice. Running a Garbaruk cassette this becomes more important as it's not as tolerant to multi shifts to easier gears as stock Sram Eagle cassettes are, but still, letting the chain wrap around a ring at least a little before shifting again makes sense and lowers the stress on the chain. I think a big reason we have the ability to shift 3 or 4 gears on trigger shifters is marketing and we'd be better off having only single click ebikeesque trigger shifters.

That's a wild take. Are you saying in 2026 we shouldn't expect to be able to shift multiple gears at a time? If that is not...

That's a wild take. Are you saying in 2026 we shouldn't expect to be able to shift multiple gears at a time? If that is not a baseline you are giving the industry far too much of a break.

Clearly you should expect it. But look at it from the other side. Why does a single click eagle shifter exist? Why did Sram program in a delay in the shifting on Transmission AXS derailleurs? Surely shifting more and faster is the better option, so why go against it?

Don't get me wrong, I pull multiple gears very often. But never when there's any sort of load going through the drivetrain. When under power it's a single shift only. As I said, running a Garbaruk cassette exacerbates this, but still it applies to all modern wide range cassettes. More so in the bigger rings than in the smaller ones as the cross-chaining is a lot less severe in the smaller rings, so shifting speed isn't such a problem there plus with the front to rear ratios the shift happens "faster" there than it does in the 40T ring range of the cassette. Also you can shift "under full power" - going from the 37Tto the 44T you can still pull more or less one pedal stroke until the crossed over chain gets to the top of the cassette and you need to ease off. At the same time you can pull the shift to 52T and all will be fine. Having a single click shifter is plenty for that and also prevents the (ab)user from pulling two gears from the beginning and churning everything.

Having multiple shifts is not a problem if you know when and how to use them. Shifting while pedalling at full power with strategic lifts in power also works perfectly fine if you know when and how to do it. If you know how derailleur drivetrains work and work around the limitations. QED, we never had multiple shifts when we had 3 front chainrings even though we already had multiple rear shifts (when the cassettes were also smaller and this wasn't as much of an issue).

Or maybe I have no idea how everything works as @AndehM says and mashing gears with snapping and churning noises and riders yelling at slipped chains is just a sacrifice at the altar of shifting performance to ensure smooth shifts for the rest of us...

This is pretty much my philosophy as well. I'm one of the few weirdos that was never willing to give up gripshift, so it's on all my Eagle drivetrains, and it is simple to fly through gears as fast as you want will spinning at low power. With any significant power, you better be good at easing up strategically during shifts though, or suffer the brutal clicking and popping noises that ensue.

I think the marketing info that preceded the release of T-type indicated that it was designed with e-bikes in mind, where shifting under significant loads was expected, and I suspect that's what led them to only allow a single shift at a time, or at least spread them out enough so that the chain was engaged with multiple teeth on the cog taking the load. My experience locally is that there are a lot of noobs that buy an e-bike as their first MTB, and they have essentially no technique at much of anything. No exception on shifting. I think SRAM knew this, and tried to build a drivetrain that could survive it.

A lot of speculation on my part though.

Yes - I’m my case at least. Have 1.5kilo scuba weight strapped to the bottom of my Single speed V10.8 park rig.

I love it set up like this. Increased the frame weight by nearly 30% down at BB and have no cassette or cable weight on the rear wheel. Works out the quite the change in handling characteristics in my experience

Is that a painted or composite barocon?

It sure does look a little bit like a composite one, that’s for sure, but I haven’t got a clue. I saw the new Baracon in Järvsö over the past weekend, it looks very neat and tidy. Looks better than the Coron in my opinion.

just saw nicolai posting a bike on a test stand. Looks very mich like the used something from the gamux sego, looks like an ebike and the downtube looks like the new gamux prototype from below.

Same here.  I have a 1.5K scuba weight as well that I have experimented strapping to my nomad 6 using a voille strap and a back country research strap.  I also have a 2lb, soft shot (stainless ball bearing) weight that I have experimented putting in the downtube storage location of that same nomad 6.  It definitely goes a long way to getting that ebike like calm/composed and active suspension feel.  Nice to be able to take it off when you're tired and moving the bike around becomes more work... but when you're fresh and pushing your limits, it certainly goes a long way to keeping the bike stable so you can swing off of it like an idiot.

The middle ground is understanding that single shifts are best while using the option to go more if you need. Naturally you need to not be a moron when you change gears but it is a little bootlicky to imply that we are lucky to have more shifts at a time because they can't figure it out.

Also e bikers ruin it by putting so much power and stress on the drivetrain while overrepresenting the demographic of people who do not know or care how to shift properly.

WHATS OLD IS NEW AGAIN.

Chris Porter has been not-so-secretly adding weights to world cup DH bikes since the early 2010s, apparently.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=myFJTO8mdtw

Then there's this from nearly a decade ago, TLDR Stott and Porter find that weights make average Joe's faster,  but not his hand selected Pro riders (at least for this track)

Watch this yesterday and reminded me of the forgotten “why” gearboxes won’t be a serious contender until they can figure out how to shift under heavy load. The need to decrease power in order for the gearbox to shift will turn too many people off, especially on a pedal bike. Makes what Leif Rodgers is accomplishing at the ews even more impressive. Have to wonder if there is seconds lost after 30+ minutes of racing from him adjusting his power in order to shift.

Does anyone know if there is info out there on what wattage output the pinion gearbox system is limited to shifting under?

You out of touch M8.

Sorry to break it out to you but there's literally 10+ times the amount of gearboxes in Whistler compared to last year.

Some people aren't as attached to whatever hasn't improved in decades and actually try things instead of justifying their purchase of a dated system.

Kind of over talking gearboxes on the Internet, but I'll just say in the past 12 hours I put my G3 in a rack by a pub and notice another G3. I go to the office and there's another. I literally walk upstairs and there's mr Wooley with guess what.

Fck derailleurs on MTB.

I wish someone (@CascadeComponents? OneUp? WRP?) would make a bash guard that's just made of lead or steel. No unsightly straps and would offer more protection than the plastic ones we have now.

I like the idea, but would that much weight only being on one side cause issues?

I think 5Dev's solution is the most elegant, personally

I think you are mistaking me for a gearbox hater but that’s not the case at all. just stating a forgotten negative to gearboxes that would hinder appeal to the average consumer and brand to make it a mass standard. I want them to be the future and I believe they are. Downhill bikes and bike park laps do not have any worry about the downsides of not being able to downshift under power in high gears as you’re rarely doing that. The downside comes to the average consumer that has a trail/enduro bike and does a lot of climbing as they will run into this problem more than others. But as multiple have stated with first hand experience, it just takes some getting used to and Henry seemed to have a bigger problem with it while climbing than others. The new zerode enduro bike is super appealing and I bet they sell a good amount of them. I bet going to a 12spd pinion instead of 9spd would help the system downshift since a riders cadence/watts will be easier to let off and get it to downshift.

I’d like to see someone design a full blown skidplate. It could clamp to the BB cups and be positioned by the ISCG tabs. Trials bikes had similar things decades ago.

You could mount a ton of weight down there and you'd get the advantage of a full width skidplate.

Specialized 2FO flat shoes seem to be out of stock everywhere. Is revised version due? Or have they pulled out of the shoe game after being a legit contender/improvement to 5.10s?

Apologies if I've missed an announcement from them, but various searches didn't give me anything...

I have noticed them lacking in some apparel recently as well.

I noticed this too as I just blew out my second to last pair.  I bet they had a glut of product left over from the covid boom and everything was on deep discount.  Sucks because those are stellar shoes for an amazing price.  Wish I would have bought 4-5 pairs instead of two.

In the economics thread didn't we conclude Specialized is moving away from apparel l?

Going back and forth between my ebike and enduro bike, I have really come to appreciate parts that add weight down low by the BB.  It helps noticeably for finding grip in loose, blown out trails.  OChain, bashguard, alu cranks, large platform pedals, non-SL spring on the coil... all "good" weight besides their other performance benefits.

There might be something to the weight on drops/gaps too, especially if there's wind. Sending some of the bigger stuff on the ebike is surprisingly good.

Pretty sure they are pulling out of the gravity side, still making road and XC shoes. I just ordered 2 pairs of the 2FO Roost flats, had to order from 2 shops as each only had 1 in my size left. Got a couple partially used pairs at home. They are so much better than Freerider pro for me. Gonna suck having to find a new shoe when my supply runs out.

So anyone has an explanation for this? Flight attendant module on a fox fork. Dont think the Sid 35mm cartridge fits a 34 fox fork. So has someone modified a 32mm sid sl cartridge to fit a fox 34?

Or is rockshox/sram doing something we dont know about yet? Apparently there was a flight attendant "event" yesterday at different dealers. I've heard that they are bringing out different levels of that suspension, so its not only on the ultimate stuff - Could they have made a flight attendant unit that fits other forks/brands as well..?

Obviously it can be just an ai/photoshop edit. But its posted by a bikeshop called "movefree" in portugal

Some employees of Intend BC have also been riding Intend forks fitted with modified Flight Attendant damper modules. It's probably not too difficult to make Flight Attendant work with non-Rockshox forks.

Damn, end of an era for sure. Best shoes ever but I see why selling shoes for $50 that are more durable than most everything on the market didn't work out. Really is a shame because the 2FO are the only shoes I'd actually pay industry prices for.

Seems like a lot of brands are doing this. QBP has reduced there catalog and a bunch of their in-house stuff is low/out of stock

I had two pairs fail in less than 30ish rides total. The first pair delaminated at the toe and the second pair had a lace blow out an eyelet.

Didn’t even bother to warranty the second time, I found freerider pros on sale for cheap.
