Finally listened to this: My theory is that this episode of 17 questions was really an elaborate ploy by the management at Vital to steal insider tricks from you about maximizing YouTube engagement, thumbnails, titles, content, etc. Crankflip to Abubaca is ridiculous. Didn’t know you were an Eagle Scout! That’s awesome. Even before mountain biking, backpacking in Scouts was one of the first things that really clicked for me as a kid who absolutely, positively, could not sit still in and be quiet in school all day, so it's cool to hear you has the same experience. I forgot about...

8/10/2026 6:11am Besides being one of the last racers to compete in cross-country and downhill on the same weekend, he’s the last one to podium both events... Won the 1991 XC World Championship, then took silver in DH. Ciocco, Italy

8/10/2026 6:10am John Tomac is widely considered one of the greatest (American) mountain bike racers of all time. During the early years of international racing he won numerous DH and XC events. He went on to be the namesake and involved with Tomac bikes. The 204 DH frame in the photo was their flagship model. The bike company then ceased to exist (in the late 2000s?). I also believe he helped coach several (a lot?) of racers over the years including Aaron Gwin for a time. Finally, if you’re into motocross, he is the father of Eli Tomac. Basically, John Tomac was...

I remember riding the Park City dirt jumps around 2010 and Porter was there. It was the first time I had ever seen someone do a tailwhip in real life and I was completely mind blown. What I remember most though was how cool he was, just hanging out and riding with all the kids.

8/7/2026 8:16am You are right, the "who owns who" question is dizzying. Makes me think, maybe the best way to make a million dollars in the bike industry is not to start with two million, but to instead be an lawyer in the M&A space. (real knee slapper there eh Jeff?)

8/7/2026 8:15am When I was a little, 5-year old kid in the 80s, I won a full-sized, red Raleigh mountain bike in a draw at the general store in my tiny, Newfoundland hometown. The old man was fucking stoked. Both myself and my older brother each road it for a time when we were older. I think he still has it out in the garage. All to say, I'm sad to hear of their demise as well, as I have a lingering fondness despite their products holding zero consumer appeal to me.

8/6/2026 2:01pm Fox Factory results are out. I'll do my normal substack thing but the stock has responded positively in post market trading with the stock up ~8% and up pretty notably on the week (from $16 to $20/sh). SSG (bike+baseball) sales are down year over year, with the company citing "oem order timing and channel destocking in response to market-wide economic conditions". Other interesting points as I skim the release... Guidance "raise" is fake. Revenue up, EBITDA unchanged. Zero incremental margin on the raise. Implied Q4 EBITDA: $41-69M. High end needs ~17.7% margin, never been done. Answer's in the bottom half...

8/6/2026 11:39am When I saw your post about Accell Group going into insolvency, I thought Diamondback would be one of the brands listed in the insolvency agreement alongside Raleigh. I remembered Accell owning Diamondback (another brand that we've observed to be struggling mightily in this thread), but I didn't see it on the list in the Reuters or BikeBiz.com articles about the recent insolvency agreement for Accell. Turns out Accell sold Diamondback and Redline (their US businesses) way back in 2019. Even if Accell still have a Diamondback landing page on their website: This is all a surprise to me. I either...

8/5/2026 11:02am Yes - I’m my case at least. Have 1.5kilo scuba weight strapped to the bottom of my Single speed V10.8 park rig. I love it set up like this. Increased the frame weight by nearly 30% down at BB and have no cassette or cable weight on the rear wheel. Works out the quite the change in handling characteristics in my experience

8/5/2026 6:07am It was part of the press release back in april, when they unveiled the new 32" stuff. I think it flew under the radar. I've been on it for the last month, 4 weekends, 10 days, 45k vert on it thus far and it's been holding up really, really well, DH casing DHR2 MTv2. We only really have one trail at N* that actually tests the grip of a rear tire, TNT, but I can't tell any difference between MG and the new MTv2 when pulling the anchor on the granite steep stuff. I'll post a pic of the tread...
