12/18/2024 7:17pm I could care less. But dating a girl who was 17 when she joined your team shortly after she becomes legal, while she still is a part of the team, is pretty questionable and wouldn’t fly in a lot of businesses. Hell plenty of companies would not let you date an employee as a manager if they were 10 years older than you. The age gap just increases the power imbalance. Ultimately if they are happy and stay happy good for them. But there are a lot of young women who get used by irresponsible men making false promises who...

12/17/2024 10:38pm Thank you for the listen, and you're absolutely right—we should have addressed this point. The proliferation of these companies in the mountain bike industry largely stems from how accessible this type of business is. These brands are essentially the "T-shirt companies" of the industry: they’re easy to start, require minimal capital, and are more akin to soft goods than advanced technical products. The primary focus for many of these businesses is building a strong brand rather than developing groundbreaking functionality—though functionality obviously still matters. It’s important to distinguish between companies that rely on mass-produced, private-label products from overseas (often found...

12/17/2024 10:36pm It should also be mentioned that there will be retaliatory tariffs imposed by other countries. So, your reward for already making products here? Now, they'll be harder to sell elsewhere. Yay. Then there are tariff exclusions or exemptions, which can be freely given to companies friendly to the administration. Smaller businesses or those without political connections may get stuck with the higher tariffs, which can hurt their ability to compete, even if they produce similar goods or services.

12/17/2024 10:35pm Tariffs and manufacturing bikes the USA: Last time Trump was in office, his tariffs on foreign made raw aluminum increased the price of domestically produced aluminum by 30% overnight. It was a significant cost increase to manufacturing bikes in the USA. Adding tariffs on complete bikes is a little different, but history has shown that increased import taxes (aka tariffs) increase costs for consumers and don't necessarily increase competitiveness for domestic manufacturing. See above example. My crystal ball says this about complete bike tariffs: if you increase the price of some things in the market, the price of all things...

12/17/2024 10:29pm To quote a VC I know, "We expect the money to be spent immediately. If we wanted money in a bank, we would keep it in our bank." Basically when these businesses become over capitalized they are pushed to spend the money as quickly as possible. You could see this in the auction for TPC where they were selling multiple 25' square photo booth setups that had to cost thousands, if not 10's of thousands, of dollars each. No way they needed this many booths this size, but they had a dumb amount of money and were being pushed to...

12/17/2024 10:24pm The Escape Collective posted above goes over why the original PE model saddled them with debt vs the model they have now. Not saying it will work better but it isn't just doing the same thing that matters. How it is financed matters quite a bit.
