The nighttain has a 20T for the larger of the jackshaft rings, not sure about the smaller, and a 27T chainring. A chain link rotates 11.25 degrees (22.5 total) going onto and off a 16T idler and 9 degrees going onto a 20T ring. Add in the fact that there are two rings on the jackshaft and that's at least 18 degrees total. A little more because one of the rings is smaller by the looks of it. Other than the engagement feel, really can't a difference between both when it comes to descending. They both mitigate pedal kickback and let your suspension work more freely. I think tire beads and rim beads were just designed differently back then. A 26x2.5 DHF or DHR was wide enough, but the Maxxis bead lacked meat to seal up. I also ran 721s on my trail bikes back then.

About an eCVT, or about a belt CVT? Gates makes belts, and I think there was a patent reveal a while back for a belt CVT for pedal bikes. eCVTs require 2-power sources to operate - either 2 motors or an ICE paired with a motor in the case of hybrid vehicles. Unclear where the second power source would come from on pedal bikes. Maybe a really crazy tandem bike design, where the two riders have to pedal at different cadences in order to get the gearing they want. Sounds like something Sam Pilgrim would ride. Quick anecdote: I’ve convinced myself to race the MSC DH at Targhee, and the Geometron G1 I pieced together isn’t quite what I hoped it would be, at least not yet. I think so because towards the end of 2025 maxxis had a dhf2 page on their site for a couple days. It had a picture of the old dhf, but had a different description and rolling resistance/ traction chart.
