6/11/2026 9:27pm Imagine looking through your gear bag and choosing white pants for a day like that. More importantly, it would be super interesting if the Specialized team riders were using steel stanchions, but I feel like there's no way that can be correct. Even if they didn't care about weight, they would either be a) enormously stiffer than alloy stanchions, in a bad way, or b) require paper thin stanchion walls, new top caps and hardware, and couldn't use any of the same internal seal sizes (although I don't know if the Ohlins DH38 uses any seals that interface with the...

6/11/2026 12:46pm I was listening to a road biking podcast recently. One of the guests on the podcast is currently a DS for a bigger team and used to be a world tour rider. One of the things that came up in discussion is how absolutely insane the new generation of riders are. They are SO fast. They are SO good in their training. They are SO dialed in their nutrition and recovery. The guest made a point to bring up an interesting-to-me factoid: They can't let the younger riders anywhere near the big-name riders during team training rides. None of them...

6/11/2026 6:30am Can confirm, a shuttle (we used our cars) to the top and then circling down and back up and doing between 1000 and 1500 vert pedalling (electric or not) is a great way to open up areas that are otherwise inaccessible to all the shuttle riders that are beholden to the pickup points. The breadth of trails you get access...

6/11/2026 2:18am It's important to note that ebikes are a good option for commuting, for older people and for mountain bikes. Ebikes are decidedly NOT an option (at least a possible wide spread one) for road bikes given the 25 kph cutoff. Besides, an electric road bike, for most people getting into the sport, kinda defeats the purpose, unlike with an MTB...

6/10/2026 11:06pm Correct, from everything I've seen it's butter for forks and Reverbs and DSG for shocks. Or forks with some oil added to the grease for the air spring if you're going DSG over butter.

6/10/2026 10:42pm I can feel the downvotes coming, but I'm reminded of a comment I made back in February comparing e-bikes to GLP-1 drugs... Maybe I'm a purist, but isn't part of mountain biking the physical effort and reward? I understand capitalism, but when I see brands cutting analog models while e-bikes continue to dominate sales, it feels like another example of a broader trend: we're pouring investment into technologies that make difficult things easier. Is it possible that because analog bikes have essentially plateaued, so people who already have a sick bike are rounding out their quiver with an e-bike? Also...

6/10/2026 3:37am Yeah a long, sustained berm high-g can compress the suspension at slower speeds on certain bikes so the HBO is less effective. You can feel this with some bikes that can bottom out just by bouncing in the carpark or preloading for a bunnyhop but don't bottom out when you land that bunnyhop, or even very often on the trail. Its probably too soft for you one way or another but it does show how bottom outs can occur in unusual places. But yes this does normally happen on less progressive frames, and it does mean you run out of...

6/10/2026 1:31am In theory, yes - thats why Push has a 50 hour "speed service" for the nine-one that lets you drain the old oil and fill it back up without disassembly, but for other brands its normally worth opening things up to make sure nothing is wearing out. Maybe after a while you would get a feel for how its holding up (if the oil was discolouring each time it means something is wearing or seals are failing) and you could extend things further without a rebuild. This was basically what we did with the old open bath marzocchis and it...

6/10/2026 1:28am Not sure that I'm ready to join in on mixing different greases just yet! I will stick with the SRAM butter for now. I think the biggest performance improvement I can give myself is servicing my suspension sooner rather than later. A freshly serviced fork is a wonderful thing.

6/10/2026 1:27am Slickoleum/sram butter is one of those products I've always found so good and reliable that there is literally no reason to change from it - I was thinking they might have done it to reduce the cost and stick to one manufacturer, but if thats true they certainly aren't passing those savings on 😅 It's probably really good - but so is sram butter so just use whatever you feel like or can easily get. From the little info I can get out the MSDS it just looks like calcium sulfonate grease (like slickoleum) with there own 11 herbs and...
