Robert from The Loam Wolf here. I was the one who broke the Scalpel, and I’m not surprised I did - overshot the landing of a large jump for an XC bike, landing in the pocket between the landing and the flat ground after it. Huge bottom out. I corrected Kaz at Pinkbike’s quote - he had flatteringly guessed me to be 190lbs, whereas I am 220lbs. Nothing fishy. I wholeheartedly believe the Scalpel is fit for purpose and that it was my fault! Was having far too much fun and got carried away.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the people who already didn't like unions mostly sided with the Crankworx organizers and the people who already liked unions agreed with the athletes. Call it a hunch.

I just mentioned this is about the wild card riders or lower positioned riders who have either no sponsors or are flow (so free bikes/parts/gear but no contract) and maybe some dudes with TINY contracts and basically NO bargaining power/leverage to ask for a better contract. Like if these dudes even have a contract at all, it could be as low as 1-2k a month. My understanding is not only is not every event like this but not every CRANKWORX is actually run the way Rotorua is. The travel expenses are pretty gnarly for non aus/nz riders, and if there's...

Richie Rude is 92kg How many? I have no idea, there isn't a lot of info on elite athletes and their weight ranges, but it isn't hard for someone muscular over 6ft to break 200lbs or be close. They aren't bumping 220, 230, etc, but approaching or over 200lbs isn't unreasonable for a 6ft tall or taller athlete especially in a discipline requiring as much gym time as DH or enduro.

death gripping Will kill your hands waaaay faster than brakes - having to declaw is often poor Technique with death grip and bumps. DM & A-line is often death gripping... especially through the braking bumps. Mavens arnt the issue. I did 3 days recently at skyline QT with Maven SLV's 200mm rs2 rotors on a 180mm bike - and as someone who suffers from clawing, I infact had less with the mavens as you can brake later and for shorter time. To reference Dale stones vid, Stop dragging your brakes.

Mountain bikers seem to have the weakest fingers ever out of any group I've been a part of. The Maven's feel fine.

Have to agree with this. There is no way I am buying a potentially very expensive purchase without knowing the rear kinematic. Luckily, I'm a giant nerd/engineer and can use linkageX3. My norco Range VLT never released any of the kinematic, so I modeled it pre-purchase, Not sure why they don't release the graphs because it's nothing outlandish and just a good old 4 bar. It's 25% progressive which is my goldilocks number, low antisquat (because motor) and minimal pedal kickback. From those graphs I knew it would suit me. Your average punter 1, Doesn't know what suits them and...

Hear what you're saying but I respectfully disagree that the widespread adoption of public kinematic graphs has been a net negative impact on MTB or even on brands. Yes, there are tons of people who suffer from confirmation bias while bike shopping or bike testing. Most people, in fact. But I think public kinematic graphs have helped make bike design better. Suspension designs are converging in a big way in the last five or so years, corresponding to the same timeframe when graphs have become widespread in product launches. We're mostly in agreement that wild curves in a kinematic graph...

I went from the Code RSCs to the Code Ultimate Stealth's and also noticed more power/lever feel, as did other coworkers who made the switch. I had Stealth Ultimate's on my enduro bike and dirt jumper (overkill, I know), and Silver Stealth's on my trail bike until I got the Maven Ultimate Expert Kit from work a couple of weeks back and tossed them on my enduro bike then moved the Ultimate's to my trail bike for aesthetic reasons and the carbon lever. Because my enduro bike frame is 200mm post mount natively, I went 200mm front and rear, which...

Can we get past the idea that everything has to be the same, but also different. Look, if its not for you, its not for you, but could be for others. I have XT's, Code RSC's, and have spent time on TRP DH EVO's. I prefer the RSC's full stop (pun intended, but only after proof reading) I do not want the light lever feel of TRP's or XT's. I find them vague, and prefer the required force to pull RSC's Some people like different things, so lets stop lamenting that SRAM didnt make a brake for YOU, but instead...

I've had the old Code RSC's and the new Stealth Code brakes, and Stealths are way stronger. Apparently the swinglink is different from what I was told. I have the Mavens as well but haven't tried them on a trail yet but any arm fatigue I get is on steep trails. People must have super weak arms if they get...

To chime in on this, I was aware of the piston massage before I received my set of Mavens for review and had the procedure explained to me prior to setup. I chose to not do it for two reasons. 1) Ive ridden every Avid/SRAM hydraulic brake since the Juicy Seven and have only ever needed to do that procedure when cleaning the pistons, not on a brand new brake setup. 2) The average consumer throws the owners manual away immediately and then starts a forum topic to help fix their problem. I wanted to give that experience a try...

Perhaps the stiff lever would have remained, we'll never know as he skipped this step in the setup and didn't bother to troubleshoot. Since the manual states the piston massage step is to "improve lever feel" and the review focuses on issues with lever feel, I would say that step in the setup is very important, as other reviewers such as Vital have now pointed out. It's pretty disingenuous to put SRAM on blast to his 280K followers when he didn't take the time to set up the brakes properly - no bleed, no piston massage.

I don't know the person in question, but I can tell you that after 26 years of turning wrenches for a living that neither being an engineer or a good (even great) rider absolutely DOES NOT mean that you know how to work on bikes.

But, if there is an increase in power because of equally advancing the pistons that will drop your arm pump issue. So it still applies to the issue being stated abotu increased arm pump. If the power isn't there because you don't correctly advance the pistons, then you can't complain that the lever actuation is what is giving you arm pump. you arent comparing apples to apples if the correct steps arent followed.
