Ridden enough 12 speed stuff that I’ve “downgraded” to XT 11 speed on one bike and X01/GX 11 speed on the other bike. These days my ego can deal with going 2 teeth smaller on the chain ring. If I still had the legs for it I would scrape together 10 speed XTR again….

Considering your bike has a ratio of 1.93 which is quite very very high, that makes sense. You need to be way lower and over the front for any traction on that bike. This in an XL is 1.82, therefor, low stack will just be a load more front end weight through geo than you are used to. Thats where the higher stack would aid in a better feeling (subjective) riding position and still maintaining good front end weight. You don't NEED to ride over the front as heavily anymore because the geo already naturally is giving you more front...

Sure, but folks were suggesting that bikes might not use a belt if it weren't for the Gates prize. Zerode, as an example, was using them 4 years before Gates offered up the prize, so clearly, not the driver for them. As mentioned a few times before, I think GBs and belt drives are an interesting solution for gravity sports. Unclear, in my mind at least, if they are definitively better than conventional drive systems, even in that area. It's pretty tough to decipher all of the politics and contractual obligations that might prevent some of the winningest DH teams...

New bike came out today. Vampire Ti DH bike with a pinion. Checks a lot of boxes for me. Reach is too short, FOR ME. I could run a mullet, I could run a bespoke small maker, I could happily ride a metal bike in the park, seems like the perfect place for a gearbox too. But I’m coming off a session with a similar reach and stay length and suspension design. And I’ve cupped it and still want more. So that’s WHY I CARE. But of course, I know a guy, so maybe I can just whip up a...

D ownhill racing has always been dangerous of course, but as the sport progresses, so too does the speed and thus the risk associated with crashes. Modern bikes and the proliferation of lift-accessed riding will also expose amateur riders to the same dangers, outside of the racetracks. We’ve seen protection companies produce helmets that certify to increasingly higher standards, but so far, no brand has managed to really combine features like MTB-specific ventilation and low weight with actual moto-level safety certification – until now, that is. When perusing the specs of the new Barocon Carbon, it seems like business as...

I have both a singlespeed and Zerode Katipo with 12spd analog Pinion gearbox. Constant drive lines FTW. Never having to worry about maintaining, hearing or shearing off a derailleur is far worth any drag compromise. Any noticeable "drag" is on gears higher than 6-7, plus shifting from say 5th to 2nd gear is instant, not a massive clunky chain moving event. That said I don't see current gearboxes being relevant for anything less than enduro or heavy duty trail bike applications. /2c

On gearboxes, I don’t think the average rider cares as much about efficiency as we think. We’re seeing this play out with radial tires. Less efficient, more grip. Everyone wants them. We forget bikes are products, not some B2B contract deliverable that has to meet a spec sheet. What tech could realistically convince everyone who has an amazing bike now (and probably got it on sale) to drop $6k+ on a new bike? Maybe it’s gearboxes, maybe it isn’t, but there’s no denying they’re in the running. If the industry wants to sell me a new park/DH frame to replace...

with significantly expanded access to various outside the norm construction techniques.... will more small boutique makers be able to ramp their mfg capacities in the shrinking market? combined with inflationary affects and DTC sales, it seems like we could see a bunch of weird bikes being better available int he coming years, if the economy doesn't kill the makers and designers off..... wound carbon, epoxy and printed lugs seems like I could do it, and im an idiot.
