8/29/2024 7:56am For those interested, I installed and have been running the Freedom Coast Cycling aftermarket SRAM levers with my Cominion setup for a few weeks and raced with them Sunday. They are a firmer/more solid replacement. They do bring the reach further from the bars and contact adjust unfortunately causes pad rub, still playing around with that part. The install was very easy, there's a video to follow along with and a small tool to assist parts of removal/installation. For both levers I think took maybe a half hour or one 7% IPA. The finger placement feels better and the lever...

8/18/2024 6:15pm I may be no enginologist, but I'm pretty sure that damping is the act of turning kinetic energy into thermal energy. That heat has to go somewhere and stuffing the shock into an enclosed space will limit both convection and radiation. Is cooling reduced enough to matter? Open question, but shocks for sure get hotter in this configuration. Do we think this configuration was cooked up in the quest of performance, or in order to make MTBs look more like road bikes?

8/15/2024 9:11pm I would add that part of this is also that the major evolution in the last 2-3 years have been in ebikes, which this forum is relatively hostile towards. Generalization and hyperbole incoming: take a 2021 ebike and compare it to it's 2024/5 variant, it will look better, have better geo, better integration, more range, more power, lighter... Take a 2021 MTB and compare it to its 2024/2025 variant, it's the same bike but with headset routing, no rear derailleur routing and maybe some minor reworking of front and rear lengths or suspension curves barely anyone can feel.

8/14/2024 4:19pm Correct. I helped lay out the new tune names etc. We had the issue where a M tune on a Super Deluxe did not match the M tune on a Deluxe and that did not match the M tune on VIVID... Also- we had a shock with extra L1, L2, L3 and L4 tunes (in addition to normal L, M and H), they were not spaced evenly and no one could remember if L1 was lighter or heavier than a L2 tune. So we went to numbers that meant something on the dyno. We wanted OEMs to be able to...

8/13/2024 3:58pm A few things regarding tyres that I haven't found answers for so many years already: - 99.99% never think of mixing brands - this gives you endless combinations because front and rear tires have different needs anyway, why not different brand? For decade now, I haven't found a better combo than Magic Mary front, DHR II rear. Mary is the ultimate front tire and has almost no drawbacks (apart from not perfect on loose over hard), the only tire that works on everything and you only take it off when it's time for new one. Also something noone ever acknowledged...

8/12/2024 7:59pm This seems like an appropriate place to spew my very esoteric knowledge of modern/ current 26" tires. For the groms, people with older bikes, mini mullet enjoyers like me... There is an audience, albeit a small one. Schwalbe is the go-to brand. For Vital readers I think their three relevant tires are: Big Betty Super Trail Soft 26x2.4 -the key...

8/8/2024 8:50pm enduro-mtb also mentions it: "However, the new casing’s increased deformation is expected to result in slightly higher rolling resistance. According to Schwalbe, the Albert with radial casing should offer the same rolling resistance as a Magic Mary in the old casing, which is mainly due to the tread pattern." And again in their summary, "an excellent all-rounder provided you can...

7/29/2024 5:38pm I'd hapilly go wireless eventually, but my issue is with 12speed rather than the electronics: The cassette range is needlessly high, requiring long derailleurs that hit more stuff. I currently run a 10-42 11s cassette, it is much lighter and cheaper than anything 12speed. I live in the french alps yet almost never use the 42t and never use the 10t cog, just run a smaller front chainring if you need to climb steeper stuff. When I was competing in enduro races I did multiple seasons on ZEE 1x 11-36 on my enduro bike, the derailleur was tiny, and looked...

7/27/2024 8:31am Just picked up a pair of Supervillains. The combination of support and grip is something special. And pins are accessible from both sides!💡 It's early days, but they made a strong first impression. My previous pedals for comparison: Giant Pinner. A huge platform, but with corners shaved, it feels slightly smaller than the villains. I find an ideal balance of grip and repositioning ease. Only 1mm concavity in the body, but no center pins, so that's enough. A great pedal let down by the lack of a rebuild kit. DMR Vault. Very grippy, but too small and too much forward...

7/26/2024 6:38pm This statement has been made confusing by SRAM marketing, and isn't true: " A T-Type transmission or something similar will shift better than mechanical because it knows the precise time to shift to prevent damage and premature wear. " There is no timing, there's no sensor that knows the position of the cassette. The magic is in the cassette itself, which is designed more like an OG front dual chainring with ramps that only move the chain up when it hits those designed shift points. There are also narrow-wide elements on the largest cogs to retain the chain, presumably for...

7/18/2024 10:25pm Gratifying to see the 31.8 aluminum handlebar hold up so well against the new stuff in rigorous testing. (As opposed to forum opinions such as my own!) Thanks for all the work that went into this.

7/6/2024 12:40pm Another shot of the new Schwalbe Albert Gravity. Pretty similar to a Magic Mary. This one is a 27.5 X 2.6. Les Gets, today.

7/4/2024 11:27am Got to see the new Schwalbe Assegai/Kryptotal type tyre at Eurobike today on a random bike that it probably should not have been on. Knobs look bigger generally to me, though I could not check side by side with the Maxxis/Conti equivalent. Looks like it should be a good addition to the Schwalbe range.

6/30/2024 12:58pm Sorry for wording it badly, of course RSC s have bearings. But they are not the performance differentiatior. This is where the swing link is the factor between the two. I must admit I very much like Code RSCs (to be honest I did like Lewis Ultimates better, but not 500+ eur better), but every Code R that I touched is, well... Garbage. The lever feel is completely different. Might be the bushings. But I'm fairly certain it's the swing link as I did used to run Guide RS brakes that had both bushings and the swing link.
