It will be a long time, if ever, before the DHF truly goes away. The DHF is available in 20, 24, 26, 27.5, and 29” diameters, a couple width options, and endless spec permutations between compound and casing. It would take years, literally, to move all those specs over to the DHX tread.

Great stuff! Bummer the trip went sideways, but sounds like you made the best of it. I completely agree with your take on TOTW/Million Dollar/etc. I got to do that a couple of years ago and it’s hands down the best single lap I’ve ever ridden. I’ll think about it randomly now and then and text my buddy who was there with me.

I call it Dental Dam Tec hnology. Hit em with the DDT. By far the best solution. Run these reusable plugs under your rim tape.

I used to have a book by Jobst Brandt sp? called The Bicycle Wheel that covers all of the math. Loaned it to an engineering student cyclist and never saw it again.

For some years now I've run a strip of Velox rim tape to cover the spoke holes and then tubeless tape over the top. Saved me from having to ride a flat all the way down a few times. I use 16mm Velox iirc on my Reserve 30 and 31|DH.

Remember, there are alot of people who are what I've heard referred to as "Speadsheet Shoppers".. And with them, bigger is better. More watts, more better.. Bigger battery, better.. Avinox has done a good job at delivering more without a huge weight penalty. And from what I've heard, the new motor has done a good job addressing issues with the first motor. Refer to the podcast with Jeff and Robot. They are a tech company addressing things the way a tech company does. But, with all that said, I'm really interested in the rumors of a full power TQ motor...

Its a shame UST never really took off. Sealant-less and tapeless rims would have solved a lot of the last decade's tyre related problems for me and many friends.

Quick anecdote: I’ve convinced myself to race the MSC DH at Targhee, and the Geometron G1 I pieced together isn’t quite what I hoped it would be, at least not yet. Hence, I started looking for a proper DH bike that wouldn’t break the bank and every bike that was in my budget is out of stock. Then I started shopping for a handful of other DH-adjacent items, shoes, pants, gear, etc., and had the same reaction: inventory feels noticeably lighter across the board. And again, bargain pricing also seems much harder to find. Really hard, actually, which I guess...

Yes, I do think the DJI and Gobao motor gearbox units are going to shake things up, but the gallows humor joke I was making is that no technology change is ever truly complete in the bike world, where there are still new bikes being sold with straight 1 1/8" steerer tubes, friction shifters, 26" wheels, and freewheels. Which is why I predict there will always be derailleurs even on ebikes, either because the ecvt is too expensive for certain price...

I love that you think gearboxes will become ubiquitous on ebikes and will entirely replace mechanical derailleurs and electronic battery-powered derailleurs and electronic hard-wired derailleurs and autoshift derailleurs and internally geared hubs, instead of becoming one more option among a confusing sea of options and pricepoints, like everything else in the bike industry. If only it were that simple.

I think it's a Statement to ensure what bosch and TQ(coming soon) are going to commit to, max 750watts with speed restrictions staying within guidelines except for certain countries like NZ where bosch(trek said ok) recently allowed up to 45kmph. I'd Like to see some restrictions around Assist multiplier, Which is where the Avinox get's alot of its love, despite people saying "i love 150nm and 1500watts, its so easy" But in reality whats actually making it easier is the 800% of input - this is not talked about enough. Bosch Did the right thing IMO and limited the 600%...
