Very true! I'm a huge fan of gearboxes and hope to get back on one again soon. The drag and efficiency arguments in real-world applications take on a hyperbolic/confirmation bias tone. Way more people could benefit from a gearbox than would like to admit. They're not for everyone in every application, but man are they good. I wouldn't want an XC bike with a gearbox unless I had to race on a muddy course. I had some seriously low-stress years with Pinion. Half of that time was spent on a hardtail and all of it was spent making bad choices...

The pins actually interface with the shoe, if you want them too. Don’t forget, the clip mechanism (the eggbeater) spins freely of the body where the pins are mounted. Dropping your heels and pushing into the pedals your shoe rotates back a degree or so until meeting the body which lets the pins sink in like a flat pedal does...

The whole gearbox/belt moment right now is solely due to a massive decline in sponsorship of the traditional bike industry. Gates has been huge enough for decades to make their pitch… Shimano and Sram clearly aren’t capitalized well enough to fight them anymore, due to poor pandemic vision and blowing so much money on useless electronics, but the science on belts v chains is pretty clear. Belts suck for the low power applications we see in cycling, and they are super duper draggy, and generally horrible to live with. Anyone who has ever worked on any belt driven bicycle will...

I have found the manitou forks including my dorado pretty easy to setup. I end up with final settings pretty near recommended windows per their website guides,

Just to dispel the idea I didn’t carefully set the dorado up — I spent hours bracketing both air pressures in the main / IRT chambers and the compression / rebound clickers. Wasted entire shuttle sessions doing this. Also bought a digital shock pump just to make sure I had single psi accuracy lol. Simply couldn’t get it to a happy place. Used other people’s settings that had it at a claimed magic place and never felt as good as a 40 (which was much easier to setup). Part of the reason I bought the dorado pro is because of...

Dorado and DH38 are best forks in my opinion. Both are more tricky to set up than Boxxer or 40 but they will reward you if you like to tinker. Boxxer is easy and less adjustments. I enjoy the Fox damper and airspring but the 40 chassis is much to rigid for me, IMHo. I’m 175lb, Vet expert rider.

Yea for sure 190lb, 6’1. I did a lot of park laps at Whistler and Sun Peaks. Rode plenty of rough tech at both Whistler and Sun Peaks (not just jump trails). Also a couple days at Kamloops bike ranch. Got to say it felt best on jump trails. Especially at speed I found it unable to respond well to chop regardless of air pressure or clicker position. I tried so many different setups with the air spring and compression / rebound. Just couldn’t get it to where I was happy.

Not sure on the proper terminology but… my ‘21 Enduro didn’t feel as good on the brakes on harsh terrain as my old ‘17 Giant Reign SX did. The Reign was more actively following the ground leading to more traction and higher corner entry speed.

It is better in all regards for me? I had two bikes last year. One with an XT 4 pot and another with the Cura4s. Curas have more power, better modulation. I think the tests typically show 20% more power than XTs. Lever feel is hard for me to describe but I like it and only rode Shimano prior. Power comes on earlier and more linear than Shimano but delivery can be adjusted quite a bit with the fcs. Only had to bleed once after 2 years. Bleed is easy, similar to sram. A top bleed is easier on Shimano...

I am a 200 lb man and if I ran 20 PSI in a DH casing I would die. I have no idea what Wolftooth is thinking with those numbers. https://axs.sram.com/guides/tire/pressure is a pretty decent one.

What’s everyone liking out of the box these days? Going on a XL GT Fury with a 130mm head tube so DVO is out with its short axle to crown and Manitou is on the bubble with its 143mm max head tube + headset spec. Headset I’m going to use ‘should’ be 11mm, but I know better and will wait...
