As a professional mechanic I'm surprised at how bad the quality control is in general in mtb. From bad alignment, poor parts spec, lack of proper covers on bearings to shit geo, etc. When clients ask what bikes I'd recommend I'm left scratching my head lol. It feels like the marketing guys decide most stuff, the product managers don't ever ride and/or the engineers are terrible. How is it that ebikes are still specced with EXO tyres, 35mm forks and 12 speed non ebike specific cassettes??? Why does DT Swiss still make straight pull spoke and aluminium nipple wheels??? I...

For. Real. The Vala rides like garbage with the base RockShox fork and shock. Even with rebound wide open it rode way overdamped. It bumbled down the trail fine but had zero passion. Kinda like my marriage.

Experienced a similar realization yesterday crawling up the hill to do a Less lap. Surreal forest and terrain, solid effort even on the descent, some flow and some jank. Just a good ol mountain bike ride, and 1199 pays homage well to the area.

Another vote from me for never ever bringing back protected riders. This way is so much more interesting. As a hardcore Canadian DH head, I was bummed Finn and Jackson didn't get in, but that's racing. The fastest guys on the weekend qualified. The unfair advantage isn't that the line outside the pole is faster, it's that they failed to pull whatever move or line they were trying to do BEFORE that point and ended up unable to keep it on track. What you're suggesting basically equates to a rider being able to skip a tricky section of track just as long as going around a course marker isn't faster. Which would turn the actual course into nothing more than a suggested route of travel. "The idea that minor mistakes or falls completely erase a race run..." - well yeah. If you fail...

After watching world cups for years it was a total treat to get to whiteness it in person. Took the gondola up and walked down the course stopping to spectate any chance we could get.
