4/25/2026 5:06am Good pod on this on pulp. Apparently the Aluminum prototypes were awesome and McGrath loved em, but before the bike went into production the engineers back at HQ (Japan) decided to beef up the chassis for safety/reliability reasons and totally ruined the chassis, making it too stiff. Assuming u are referencing the 98 CR250 of course.

4/25/2026 4:51am DH bikes aren't made to have wide appeal to consumers, the current demo is an obvious sign of that. Respectfully, they do not care if the consumer would be miffed at an expensive cassette or don't really care about total cost of the frame +/- 500-1000. Besides, it's not an either or... maintaining UDH compatibility still allows for cheaper, standard mount drivetrains that have a variety of cost options. There is no reason that they wouldn't go to a UDH design when all of their other rear triangles are headed that direction. It seems obvious that they would go to...

4/25/2026 4:50am Gott damn, Dave Weagle sure does love his short chainstays! Also the increase of ~3.5mm per size is near pointless. And yes I know CS length will grow at sag.

4/24/2026 5:39pm Tire width has definitely changed, so bizarrely a 2.5" is not a 2.5". For starters, those old 26" tires of yesteryear were mounted to narrower rims (Mavic 521's were a 21mm inner width, compared to most rims these days that are 29 or 30mm), but most of the old tires were crazy undersized to boot. A 2.5" Assegai these days looks (visually, not scientifically) double the size of an old 26x2.5" DHF. In reality, the numbers are more like 64mm vs. 57mm mounted on the same size rim, but that's still a big difference. Here's a crazy fact: 2.5" translates...

4/22/2026 10:57pm They got it wrong all the time too. Honda in ‘97 being the prime example. How they didn’t listen to McGrath I’ll never understand.

4/22/2026 6:21pm Too much. Riding the first version of the Ripmo AF (it was pretty much a noodle) and it was mostly ok other than coming out of really fast steep berms, which is becoming a very small portion of my riding. Off camber, weird slow tech and the like… it was pretty good. Next bike was a carbon Capra MX that...

4/22/2026 11:20am Good questions! I had a great conversation with Kiran MacKinnon of Santa Cruz Bikes at Sea Otter (and it should be published as a podcast at some point), and he said that because e-bike frames have to be so much stiffer than pedal bikes, taking the motor and battery out basically produces a bike that rides like a block of wood (i.e. overly stiff and harsh over bumps). That doesn't mean that an e-bike with the motor removed is unridable (i.e. Martin Maes racing DH on the e-Wild frame as a development project for the new Rallon DH bike), but...

4/22/2026 11:07am No, the Scott engineers are furious because Specialized added so many new links but didn't seal them inside the frame. They're yelling at their screen right now, "Just make it look like a pregnant whale! It's so easy!"
