What keeps an Intense from being ugly is to keep the guy in the paint/sticker department the hell away from the designs. Not seen a good looking color scheme & sticker/paint patter in years over there. Meanwhile YT is making bikes with no logos that look sexy as crap. I mean, even Kona is making good looking bikes now with the "less is more" graphics.

Is it just me or do these high pivot bikes only exist because of 29inch wheels? Back when we rode those microscopic 27.5 wheels you could run a really small BB drop which lets you get away with quite a high pivot without much chain growth. But these new 29ers need at least a 25mm drop reducing the amount of rearward path you can get for that amount of chain growth. It gives manufacturers two options go for the specialised method and just accept the pedal kick back or go for the trek approach and have an idler.

Look at it from this angle, here in Australia, Covid thankfully didn't really shit in our cornflakes like the rest of the world as far as financially and lives lost. But we cannot travel internationally. So you have a bunch of people, working from home, saving god knows how much by not commuting and going to Bali for the 8th time this year. They need to blow that disposable cash on something. Any toy, be it a Dirtbike, performance car, caravan/caper and especially Bicycles are getting snapped up for the most insane prices. Some of the Facebook buy/sell pages I'm...

That's what most people don't understand.. These price increases don't mean the shop or the bike companies are making more money.. They need to make a certain amount of money to stay in business. Hell, last week I had some kids bikes that the MSRP went up $10.. My cost went up by $11.. So, that price increase was actually a small loss for us..

I will try to comment on this one hoping that robots will correct me if I am wrong so I can learn something new (as they do themselves). In my opinion abp is a diffrent animal than the rest since on this design the brake caliper sits on a different part than the rear wheel. on all non abp designs the caliper and the rear wheel rotate together around a pivot or an instant center, so that the rear axle path is tied together with the rotation of the brake caliper. abp ist more like a kona stab with the...

Follow up question. Is it really axle path that is the primary thing that defines the anti rise percentage for a bike, rather than suspension system / pivot locations etc? Do Horst links and ABP type bikes (the low anti rise bikes) all have a very vertical path?

I am going to go ahead and say I did notce brake squat. In early days I used to ride single pivot bikes with rather short swingarms, I had a commencal supreme dh (the first one with 180 mm rear travel) and a kona entourage. then I changed to 4 bars (rm slayer, the first one with real 4 bar and then giant glory 00 and 2 norco aurums). the sensation was that 4 bars had more traction while braking and were easier on my hands in braking bumps. the way I see it is that a single pivot bike...

Also, the rear axle is effectively a suspension pivot that the wheel rotates ever so slightly around as the swingarm moves up and down and the wheelbase changes (bounce up and down with one or both brakes locked and you'll feel it). Depending on the design, the use of the rear brake restricts the free motion of this pivot to a greater or lesser degree which can account for that slightly harsher feeling even when the suspension is sitting high in the softest part of its travel. I personally always liked the feeling this sort of feedback provided, and back...

Great questions- seems like you'd be on Team Hart. Danny was probably chasing those exact suspension attributes with his floating brake arm. When talking about brake squat, "stable" implies a fixed center of mass, which isn't a realistic assumption. Riders can move all around, and what you're suggesting is that a rider whose suspension isn't getting stiff then supple then stiff again from braking will be better able to shift weight to compensate for braking-induced mass shift. Fair point, and maybe you're right. I'd love to know what Danny and the Saracen team observed in their year of testing the...

just6979, great points. Yes, you're totally right that when your fork or rear end is extended, the suspension is in a part of its travel that yields a lower absolute spring rate. Totally. What I'm saying is that, when your rear wheel is unweighted, you still aren't generating enough compressive force on the suspension to make it absorb bumps, even with a lower absolute spring rate. For your example, yes, being in the backseat does make the front end of your bike harsh and unwieldy. If you imagine being in a near-manual position leaned way off the back of the...

Oh yeah, of course a 2017 bike is not that short. I was comparing to a 2006ish design, haha. I guess I forgot to say "yeah you're very right about a couple years old bike being fine", just corroborated it by jumping directly to "yo, even a 2006 bike is 'ok' in many ways". I think the comfort and fit can still apply across just a few model years, depending on the bikes at either end and the rider, and you nailed it with those examples. But often times just a 10 or 20 or 30mm larger window of "comfort...
