TEAMROBOT Liked a reply to forum topic Can we talk modern XC bike capability on here?
8/28/2024 9:54am If you're wanting to buy a new XC or downcountry bike, definitely do it. You'll have a blast. But first, do me a favor and borrow someone's XC or downcountry wheels with tires mounted and swap your rotors over so you can try your Nomad with faster rolling tires and your rear shock locked out. It'll blow your mind how much more fun those now-boring trails are. I just have the one long travel bike (SC Megatower, like you) and with two wheelsets I'm able to have fun anywhere. Obviously I'd rather have a dedicated short travel bike but I'm...

8/28/2024 9:54am I'm just about to put up my review of the Epic8 (this week) but have also extensively ridden the Transition Spur, Trek Top Fuel and Transition Smuggler (built light). Overall I'd highly encourage you to look at all of these bikes. Other bikes I'd put on the list include the Santa Cruz Tallboy, Yeti SB120, and the Ibis Ripley. IMO, there is a big difference in bike performance and feel between those chassis that are flex stay driven and those chassis that fully rely on pivots. If you are skewing toward doing a little racing and have a longer travel...

TEAMROBOT Liked a product review First Ride - RockShox All-New Domain

All hail the e-bike. You may not own an e-bike, you may even hate the idea, but we all have e-bikes to thank for big, tough, durable products like the 2021 RockShox Domain. The 38mm stanchion Domain is great for big heavy riders like me, but in the grand scheme of things, riders like me are a pretty small subset, and we aren’t a major consideration for product managers at RockShox and FOX. If it wasn’t for the massive interest in e-bikes, I’m fairly confident this product wouldn’t exist. Without e-bikes, big heavy riders like me would still be riding...

neil.carnegie.1 Added a comment about feature BRAKE JACK DOESN'T EXIST!! Advice!! with Team Robot, March 2021
3/23/2021 2:01pm Follow up question. Is it really axle path that is the primary thing that defines the anti rise percentage for a bike, rather than suspension system / pivot locations etc? Do Horst links and ABP type bikes (the low anti rise bikes) all have a very vertical path?

neil.carnegie.1 Added a comment about feature BRAKE JACK DOESN'T EXIST!! Advice!! with Team Robot, March 2021
3/22/2021 11:38am I would say you are feeling brake squat limiting suspension movement, but its not jacking it up, it's doing the opposite and pushing it into the travel under braking. The effect is like slightly firming the spring and slowing the rebound on a bike which generates a lot of squat while the brakes are on (I think). The positive trade off (at least on paper) is it should help to combat fork dive a bit. As others have pointed out, various people have won many DH world cups and Ews overalls on bikes which have large amounts of this trait...

Indeed, it's probably reasonable to say this is their workplace and they definitely can't work from home (unless they have some backyard trails). I do think that there might be some people watch this and think 'if they can ride in a group why can't we'

I didn't say they were breaking lockdown rules, I said it appears that way. I was asking a question on how people viewed this and if they should be 'setting an example' or not, I was not making a judgement. Though I would point out that an Instagram post from Steve Peat makes it appear likely that filming took place five days ago. Some might argue this is their 'workplace' and they can't work from home. Interested to see what people think.

Sorry that you think the question is dumb. Maybe I can attempt to ask it in a more articulate way and hopefully get a more constructive response. Some pro riders on YouTube have gone to great effort to demonstrate their strict adherence to lockdown rules (possibly helping reinforce the rules), whereas this video takes a different approach and provides a momentary escape from lockdown. Considering that both ways could be well within the rules; which do you think is the best message to viewers?

It might appear to the casual observer that they are violating the lockdown rules in place in the UK currently. Should we (and sponsors) expect pro riders to set an example on such things or does no-one care if they break the rules to get some sweet footage?

10/3/2020 2:49am Reality check: Wheel size is 324th on the list of mountain bike variables that affect performance, and it's definitely behind suspension setup, BB height, head angle, and tire size on that list.

TEAMROBOT Liked a comment about Feature The Ultimate Park Bike? Vital's Yeti SB165 Project
8/13/2020 2:20pm Disagree on all points. 38's still creak, and nothing compares to the stiffness of a dual crown fork for big holes, steep terrain, and heavy braking. If you're in a bike park there's no need for 12 speeds, and the longer chain and derailleur cage are much more likely to make clack-clack noises and get bent. Lastly, it's not a coincidence that Fox makes the most durable seatposts and the ones with the highest stack height. Bushing overlap = durability. Pretty simple.

7/15/2020 11:18pm Wow....truly sad and caving into PC pressure. Nothing about using 'Tribe' is insulting or demeaning. It's a group of people with common bond, in this case Yeti bike culture. Textbook definition = "a social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader."

7/15/2020 11:16pm Hello Yahmon, I'm not "clearly" speaking to you. I'm replying to the myriad of comments such as yours. You can find them on facebook, Twitter, Instagram (actually, scratch that, Yeti disabled comments on the post) and PinkBike. First I'll push back on the idea the word tribe is offending a group of people. I see no strong evidence this is the case. I can say this for a bunch of reasons, one of which I could go use it in conversation (again, applying the oxford webster definition) everyday for a year and this side of Barnard or Brooklyn nobody is...

7/15/2020 11:13pm Wow. Yes, this will get downvoted but I find freedom to use this language more important than popularity. Counter culture is no longer "counter". Its the culture now. People with values like mine, ones that point to pragmatism, and trying to note how impossible (and dangerous) a task like this (making sure nothing is offensive to anyone ever) no matter the expense, are becoming, oddly, the counter culture. Tribe is not an offensive word. Or rather, if it is, we'd better dig up the root of every single word we currently use and put it before the post modernist committee...

7/15/2020 11:11pm Wow, kudos for finding a way to fit the words oppression, privilege, freedom and vindication all within three short paragraphs. In all seriousness, this is the wokest thing written on Vital maybe ever. Yeti changing a name changes NOTHING for Native Americans. Go ahead, call any Nation you like tomorrow. Ask them how their day is going. Do the same in a year. Ten years. Maybe we can ban the word tribe all together, that'll fix it. The truth is, we have real issues. And this type of thinking does NOTHING to fix them (not sure why I keep putting...

5/25/2020 1:02pm
He says that most gauges aren't zero loss, not that most pumps aren't zero loss. But either way, the whole idea of air loss just doesn't add up. Think of it this way. When you attach a shock pump, you thread it on a ways and it forms a seal (i.e. pump still reads zero, but the shock/pump interface is now airtight), and then you continue threading it on (those last 1-3 rotations on the threads) until the pump opens the shock's valve core and you get a reading. The whole idea of "air loss" hinges on the idea that...

5/15/2020 12:36am Nice! It's been interesting to watch chainring size trends over the years. In my office I have some of the old-school System 1 guide rings in the "Mammoth" size, I think that's like a 56t! Someday when I'm bored I should mount it to a super-low modern bike and see if the shock or guide ring bottom-out first! I've been 1x myself since the late '00s, probably. The trail bike setup back then was 34 x 11-34t, IIRC. That makes me feel a little soft now, running 34 x 10-45t, but I know I ride a lot more now!
