Sorry, slow getting back to this… finally remembered to take some photos, and it’s somehow become V4 in the meantime. I’ve stuck with Bambu’s TPU for AMS. Still quite a hard, smooth surface, but with a little squish. It’s been a much better material for this than the earlier rigid versions. Added another angle on the front of the flange...

I was thinking of trying a set of flanged BMX grips, run in the reverse configuration, to put the flange on the outside and simulate these new "bar ends". It seems like it could have some advantages in terms of the rubber being continuous, with no weird gaps or seams, and perhaps be a little more comfortable. I was thinking of something like the BMX version of the Longnecks: https://www.odigrips.com/products/longneck-st-bmx-grips Having said that, the separate bar ends being made of a harder material seems like it would deflect tree grazes, and also work better as a sort of skid plate...

Thread revival : TPU test report for the 3D print nerds amongst us. Bambu's 'TPU for AMS' is really good. 68d, shiny and slippery like PLA but with some 'squish', you can control that with walls and infill too. I like 5 walls, 40% infill. But don't use that earlier model I shared for TPU, New version distributes the loads...

I've had a set of the wolftooth ones on my dh bike for a few months now. Did absolutely nothing for hand fatigue, but did save my pinky finger from getting squashed by a tree at sunpeaks.

Just printed a set in ASA. Got a trip next weekend to snowshoe. Gonna try them on the downhill bike, seems the best place for bar ends.

TPU as a print material? TPU will probably be even gripper than straight plastic... Good point on the flange to insert becoming the weak point. If you still went that route a big spacer on the outside might help things to take the load or at least compress things a bit.

Yeah for sure, this will be different for everyone. I'm like you and overlap the edge of the grip normally. It made my 800mm bar feel 780-790mm ish, which is fine for me. Alternatively if your hands sit really inboard, like BMX riders where the grips stick out the edge of your palm (so weird). Cut your bars or you...

I tried the WT ones for a couple of weeks and ended up taking them off for a few reasons. They made my existing bars feel too narrow. I’ve run this width for a while but the bar end changed arm angle and felt awkward / super tight. Might be my hand position. I really disliked them when climbing my enduro bike. I’ve never noticed how much I move my hands, rest on ends of the bar, flare at an angle, etc. These made me feel constrained on climbs to a certain position and made my hands tired.

Yeah that's why I like your slippy tape idea. Undo the grippiness whilst retaining some squish. I don't really feel the need for squish for my hands but a relatively hard TPU should be a little better at withstanding crush impacts between handlebar/ground. Will report back... There are quite a few designs circulating on Instagram/makerworld/printables etc. It's cool to see...

Print it in a way that's best for strength (lay it flat or rotate it by 90 degrees so you're not bending it across layers) and then put some smooth foil, tape, etc. on the inside to prevent gripping.

Yeah I pondered a few orientations, this is strongest since: - weakest point is flange to bar insert joint and there's not much you can do about the stress concentration there... So don't want layers coinciding with it if you lay it flat. The flange will just pop off. - failure mode for me was bending moment on rear edge...

I've been doodling around with my own design for a few months now... I quite like the surface to be harder*, flatter, smoother so it has less friction and doesn't grip the glove/hand, as long as the flange is at the same angle as the edge of the hand... I can then push my hand against it without pinching or...
I will preface everything I am about to say by mentioning that I work for a wheel company, and as such I have an unusual capability to replace wheels. I am very very lucky to be where I am and as such this can be taken with a grain of salt. With that being said... Inserts for alloy rims are a tough sell for me. I am not an exceptional rider, nor am I particularly heavy rider(165lbs with kit), and I have destroyed an aluminum rim despite running a heavy Cushcore insert. Somewhere on this website there is an excellent...

Ah, got it. So shops were opening entirely new brand accounts to gain access to Avinox inventory and capitalize on the hype. That is materially different from an established dealer in good standing being required to fund inventory before taking delivery. Most of my finance work is one step upstream from the retailer, but every outdoor company I have worked with offers qualified dealers terms. Cash up front is generally reserved for new accounts, weak credits, or unusual demand situations. The Pivot example sounds less like a failure of dealer financing and more like shops making a speculative inventory bet...

I'm totally sold on clik. I've tried most, presta are fine, Fillmore brilliant... But what sells it for me is using a Topeak e-booster (or similar rechargeable thing). Click on, pump, accurate gauge, click off, ride... Because it physically opens the valve rather than being a one way valve that's closed by the pressure in the tyre, and it means...

As many of you know, I had been working on a Strava alternative that I planned to launch this spring. Unfortunately, I had to put it on pause. It’s still something I want to build, but after digging in further, I became less convinced it could pay my bills anytime soon. And realistically, raising outside capital for a non-AI consumer product with Strava as the entrenched incumbent felt close to impossible. The good news is that the amount of capital required is probably far lower now than it would have been even a year ago. Frontier models have made product...

I don't want to come off as angry or pretentious, but I find what's going on with Avinox and the Spesh "class 2" emtb disgusting. I'm curious how the people at traditional bike companies feel about what they're helping proliferate into our world for all of the people who created and maintain the trails (mostly volunteers like myself) to contend with. How conflicted are they? Between the general financial malaise in the industry, 32" wheels nobody truly seems excited about, and the unprincipled embrace of avivox/DJI/amflow, what is general morale like? Conversely, and assuming everyone there isn't also yelling at...

I think it goes without saying that the torsional stiffness of a fork on a whole is a function of many things. The only point was that, assuming the same material, there isn’t a magic 15 mm axle that’s stiffer than a 20 mm axle. Yes the hub adds to the torsional rigidity of the axle. If you had the same exact hub layout, the 20 mm version would add more stiffness than the 15 mm version. The rigidity of the hub is limited by axle preload and coefficient of friction at the various hub interfaces. Proper axle torque would...
