I think the M&A is good overall. There are too many large bike manufacturers and not enough small manufacturers (imo). The consolidating of the large manufacturers should alloy more efficient investment and improvement in technology and materials construction, which is really where MTB is heading. Geometry is cheap to engineer, scaling 3D printed yokes, new carbon technology etc isn't, and requires big players with big investment. Having said that, the growth in boutique offerings is the necessary part to offset this, and we've seen the trickle down in materials tech benefit this micro brands. I.e frameworks design, Privateer, Airdrop etc...

I'll offer up two: 1. Mountain flow eco wax makes several plant based bike oils and cleaners that are biodegradable 2. WNDR Alpine makes a few good shirts that work great for biking made of recycled polyester and algae

What I find confusing about the new Stumpjumpers is they offer it in a coil version with a 27.5 wheel and they've corrected geo for the smaller wheel using the upper link just like with the previous Stumpjumper, which significantly reduces progression. So the most linear bike in the entire lineup comes with a coil.

I don't want to REALLY derail this thread...but about 15 years ago I worked as an engineering consultant and ultimately spun off a small company to develop vibration based energy harvesters that were essentially tuned mass dampers. The damping was electromechanical, and tuned both with hardware and software. Our secret sauce and patent material was a mechanical means to decouple the frequency of the harvester from the input source...it could be very efficient with a wide range of input excitation frequencies. The more I thought about this I feel the right framing (pun intended) is even more simple. The consolidation has (mostly) already happened. One fun way I tried to showcase this semi-objectively was by using Google Trends and seeing frequency of keyword searches of bikes we all consider "household names". As you can see, the Specialized Stumpjumper and Trek Fuel see an order of magnitude more traffic than anything from the smaller guys. Santa Cruz Nomad was a little bit of a a shocker here. RE: New Stumpy... My big takeaway is when the company who arguably has the largest capex budgets in the industry keeps outputting new models that are small evolutions (Epic EVO, new Stumpy, don't forget Jordan beat Finn/Loic on the "old" demo last season), not revolutions, that tells me we've really hit a plateau of technological progression. This isn't a bad thing, per se, unless you are in the business of selling bikes to bike nerds who used to think they needed the latest/greatest every year. FWIW, this has also happened in the moto, snowmobile, ski, road bike etc world, too...

100% disagree with your take, simply because in an ideal scrub the bike is still perfectly in line with the direction of movement. A whip for sure will slow you down, and that is what your "bike on a car rack" analogy corresponds to. Frixtalon + dark googles + scrub is just how I picture myself every ride, despite actually doing a weak turnbar on an ebike wearing prescription glasses in a 3/4 helmet.

The NFL doesn't pay players. F1 doesn't pay Lewis. The NBA doesn't pay LeBron. The venues they play in don't pay them either. I don't think you understand who the riders "work for".
