IIRC corrosion resistance and plating were expensive challenges that stopped production of the steel SweetWings. The steel cranks were over 150g heavier than ti. So, if labor costs are similar, with an increased cost for plating, and a saving for the steel material vs titanium, perhaps a steel version would cost almost the same as Ti eeWings but weight more than SLX. I imagine much if not all of the tooling for Ti could be used in fabricating steel.

5/9/2025 12:35pm Sorry, I should've been clearer. ORA does a lot of manufacturing of ti and steel in Taiwan. IIRC Cane Creek uses them to manufacturer eeWings and Starling uses them for various things like their stems and rear triangles.

600£ gets me one single prototype bolt with two threadbolcks to tighten both bolts to 55Nm for 200 times before increasing torque by 5Nm every 10 cycles until the max torque of 100Nm is reached and very sore arms have to give up. The price is just high enough that I don't loose to much money without even including prototypes and my time. Comparing Swiss made small batch parts with shimano SLX is kind of rude but mathematically you are not wrong.

Copying the 5Dev cranks tells you everything you need to know about a company. All they care about is looks. The originals are a horrible engineering design. They should have copied Came Creek EEwings. But that would require some skilled welders and not just feeding a CNC machine. Innovation would be using ultra high strength steel from the automotive industry and make a tubular crank that uses the same axles as RF, Cannondale , FSA and all the others that use that same axle.

Not that I am for people outright cloning other companies' products, I have experienced this professionally myself and it is infuriating, but there is zero IP theft happening with Lewis copying Trickstuff's brakes. Design patents are a type of IP that protects the aesthetics of a product, keeping me too products from existing, but they are super rare and very difficult to get granted. Re: Water satchel sanitary issues/remedies. One of the best bladder & bottle tips I ever got was from Dirt Rag (RIP) ages ago. That tip? Denture cleaning tablets. 2-3 depending on the size of bottle/bladder. Works a treat and even adds a slight minty taste to the water, which is better than the plasticy/rubbery taste of some of the aforementioned, IMO at least.

I rode my first ebike at Kanuga. Specialized evo. Perfect spot for that. I went from 5 laps on my analog (the week before) to 10 laps on the ebike (in almost half the time). The first thing I noticed was that ebikes kinda level the playing field. There were two dads riding with their kids there that day, and everyone was able to ride together despite age / strength differences. I've always heard brake jack is terrible on single pivots. True/false/thoughts. I'll come back to Brake Jack, but in my experience it's no worse on our bikes. Just learn to brake in the right places, this is the most important skill for being a good rider!

So I rode my trail bike this last weekend, which has code rsc, 200mm hs2 rotors, metallic pads and freedom coast levers. I was blown away by how sketchy the brakes felt on this bike after riding my santacruz bullit with maven's on it and my nomad with trp dhr evo's so much lately.
