Not quite an open standard. SRAM will grant you a license, at no cost, if you apply (I've done it). But it isn't open, and there's nothing saying they have to grant said license. When you apply, you interface with the SRAM legal team. I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing everything they can to make things challenging for Shimano...

Interesting take- I'm kinda the opposite. I like seeing the convergence of designs and features. At this point companies have to sweat the details and provide superior value to get business. I want a reliable, good value that does what it's supposed to do... Don't care if the bike is different or rare.

This is why you're playing with fire working that closely with family. It works great, until it doesn't, then things can get dicey. Tony should offer to walk away and let Tahnee decide what's best for her, but will he do that without friction?

As a viewer from the comfort of my work from home office which is also my living room? Not really haha All the weather at WC's this year has made for some insane displays of bike handling skills, contrasted by the unlucky few who have got the short end of the stick with changing conditions. I kinda like the drama though. I think this weekend we are on track for consistent conditions as we build towards race day. Unless I just jinxed everyone....

Hmm, not sure why you assume I’m “not running proper equipment.” My bike is built for riding in legit terrain where shit can go sideways. Thankfully, it rarely ever does - exactly because I “run proper equipment” - but if/when shit does happen I want at least a fighting chance of riding my bike out of the woods. I’ll take the minimal weight penalty of some bits and pieces rather than hiking out.

I know this site is more big bike centered but Corey Wallace (Kona endurance racer...) spotted on a proto g3 Hei-Hei. Proof that Kona is still alive!

I'm still thinking that the pedal kickback perception has more to do with chain management than classic kickback caused by anti-squat. Said another way, it's the chain slap pulling the cassette forward, and then slamming into a pawls/teeth, vs chain growth, caused by anti-squat/growth. This has less (but still it's something) to do with hub engagement and more to do...

I think that the derailleur hanger stopped being a sacrificial part after we moved from 11spd to 12spd (maybe 10 to 11) because the tolerances are tighter everything has to be stiffer and more precise. It’s very difficult to make a hanger stiff enough for good 12spd shifting and still sacrificial.

Came here to ask the same thing. As a taller guy, I’m a big fan of the progressively steeper seat tube angle trend. At 6’2” I’ve always felt like I was climbing a recumbent on slacker designs. The taller the seat post goes, the farther back I would sit. I’ve been riding a current Norco Range for a few years now, and it’s more comfortable grinding up climbs than I’ve ever felt. A side effect is there’s more weight on my hands comparatively, but it’s an acceptable trade-off. I’ve seen an S5 Enduro a few times, and without even throwing...

I like shimano brakes a lot more than sram (I’ve yet to try the mavens tho) but you have to admit dot is objectively better than mineral oil.

2 rumors, 1 leading to another... Part of it might have been discussed previously, but I couldn't find any references in the thread. Devinci is launching a new Troy, sometime in September. There staff openly talk about it. Made of aluminum only, welded in Canada, with frame storage, will have mullet capabilities. Rear travel goes to 150, with 160 fork. Reach is growing about 5 mm. All SRAM builds. Top one with GX AXS t-type. The less expensive build are NX. This release has been pushed back by more then 6 months now. Shop employees are saying there is an...

Might be a controversial opinion but I think he probably has the right intentions of wanting to grow the sport across all disciplines but he's limited on what he can actually do when WB are wanting to squeeze everything cent out of the lemon they can and then discard it and move on to the next one. WB don't see MTB as a sport/lifestyle like we do and only see it as a resource to make money. The worst part about it as they are not looking at it as a renewable resource, rather a finite resource. As much as...

I agree with everyone here, it's all about the tires. My daily driver was a 2019 Transition Patrol (27.5) with 160/170. When I swapped over a fast rolling rear like an Aggressor or Nobby Nic, big days with up to 10k vert, all trail felt great! I now have a shorter travel bike to go along with it, a 125/140...

Was just reading Escape Collective's article about security researchers hacking a Shimano Di2 drivetrain (tl;dr it's possible but highly unlikely in any real-world scenario) and this quote about wireless drivetrains jumped out at me: "Wireless shifting has also made aspects like installation simple and easy to do. In fact, that’s the primary reason we have it, said Wakeham. He pointed out that riders aren’t the main customer for big component brands like SRAM and, especially, Shimano; bike brands like Specialized and Trek are. For the rider, 'wireless isn’t innovation for the user except in aesthetics,' he said, because shifting is...
