You're an amateur. I carry a ton of tools, but every other year or so something goes so horribly wrong I STILL have to walk back to the car. Bikes are pretty good though. My proudest trailside repair was actually roadside...blew a shifter cable 40 miles from home on a cold February day on my gravel bike. I had an extra cable in my little revelate gas tank bag. Fixed it, rode home.

Doesn't it seem obvious that the optimal wheelsize for XC racing would be: 1. The biggest wheelsize you can fit into your frame and fork without significantly jeopardizing bike fit, and 2. The biggest wheelsize that's still available with a competitive tire (casing/compound/tread) If you can check both of those boxes, I don't see why it wouldn't be faster than running a smaller wheel. I'm sure we would see diminishing returns for 36", 39", or even 42" wheels (as you mentioned), but diminishing returns are still positive returns. As long as you can build a wheel with featherlight spokes and...

I love my Santa Cruz Bullit ebike, but under California law, specialized is now making mopeds, not ebikes. I agree with Hans. It's disappoint to see Specialized disregard existing ebike laws and try to compete with DJI for the highest power boomer scooter. 750w is a reasonable limit for ebikes. Let's let ebike be ebikes, not mopeds or emotos.

If it's a very compact bike, such as a short travel ripper, I'd lean towards the larger size. If it's a very long bike, such as some gravity sled, I'd lean towards the smaller size. This is just in general. Of course I'd consider a lot more than this, as I'd like to make full use of all the context I can get for my big decisions.

It's not all about climbing speed and fitness though, the 120/130 bikes FEEL very different on the trail. You get a lot more direct feedback and much more "snappy" behavior, which can be very rewarding if you ride them on trails that suit them. Even a light build on a capable 150 bike doesn't get anywhere near that same feeling. Of course it all depends on the terrain you ride. If you take your shorter travel bike on essentially the same kind of steep and rough trails that your 150 bike excels on, you'll just beat yourself and the bike...
