That’s the impression I got, too soft an alloy rather than stamping==bad. Personally I couldn’t care less if the discs are true and if I can use the pads I want. Also, not that we do it much anymore, the rounded edge makes dropping the wheel in a little easier. For some reason I thought that laser cut brake discs...
Bro, how much additional unsprung mass (AUM) you runnin’? Life starts at +5kgs. What is tweaking sprung/unsprung mass ratio really achieving that could not be done with the traditional suspension parameters. An over sprung and under damped system? Static and/or dynamic friction? I get that heavier bikes -> greater inertia -> harder to knock around off line. Is it as...

There won't be any littering because anyone that drops a weight by accident will INSTANTLY notice the change in suspension performance

All this gearbox talk has me thinking about all the ones that didn’t take off ~Graduation (Friends forever) by Vitamin C plays ~ I also wonder what a new look at either setup could yield

Believe it or not, the DHR2 has been the fastest rolling Maxxis DH tire for a long time, faster than the DHF, Assegai, HR2, HR3, Shorty, everything. That's why Greg ran DHR2's front and rear (2.3 EXO casing, I think?) on his World Champs bike in Pietermaritzburg in 2013. It was a gamble to run such thin tires on the DH track, and he famously hit a rock and got a leak on the rear tire in his race run, such that it was completely flat within a minute of crossing the finish line. That was 13 years ago, so...

For some years now I've run a strip of Velox rim tape to cover the spoke holes and then tubeless tape over the top. Saved me from having to ride a flat all the way down a few times. I use 16mm Velox iirc on my Reserve 30 and 31|DH.

CVTs can simulate fixed ratios so that might end up being a control choice, although I don't know how the "feel" of it would differ given the unique power inputs in a bicycle application

Except Sram's 11 SPD is 42t max and comparing granny gears you have to take wheel roll out into account as well as a larger wheel is effectively a harder gear. A 30t on a 29er is about the same as a 32t on a 27,5 and a 34t on a 26 inch bike. I also said if your terrain supports it, there are places where it makes more sense to have a 28t in the front with a 52t in the back on a 29er than a 30t. Double so if you're thinking about going 165 mm or shorter...

How many of those DH teams do you think would be running gearboxes right now if there wasn't a €100k carrot being dangled before them?

I need a high pivot CVT. What should my chainstay length be?

There are quite a few bikes where apparently ST could be just “kept straight” after all the pivot points down to the bb area, so I find your points reasonable but not absolute Smile To me it still seems as “form over function” approach, unless I’m missing some subtle technical details (which is actually very much possible)

Sure I agree it can be done, but it would have been a conscious choice and other design parameters may have been deprioritised as a result. Your original post asked “why don’t ALL bikes [without a shock tunnel]”. Another example is that in the case of rad-XC bikes like the epic, water bottle space would win over a slightly longer...
