There is not much space for sustainability/environmentalism in a high consumption sport like mountain biking. As far as equipment goes, the most sustainable thing you can do is buy a bike that will last you more than a season or two, and avoid driving a lifted Tacoma to the trailhead.

Very well written. Another thing I can't help to wrap my head around are the weights we're strapping to the unsprung side of our rear ends: Shimano RD-M980 (2011) 175g Sram XX (2011) 180g Shimano RD-M9120 (machanical) 241g Sram Transmission XX (incl. Battery) 465g Not a total apples to apples comparison, but looking at this I can't help but feel this isn't the pinnacle of drivertain design.

I found team rankings ......of course not on the UCI or Wso sites. https://mtbdata.com/ranking/2024/teams/downhill/ Interesting reading 🤔

One thing to pay attention with those levers, the free stroke adjustment is just "push the piston in" while the lever stays in its stock position. So make sure the circuit isn't closed from the reservoir when the lever is at its resting position, otherwise it'll be problematic when the brakes heat up and the liquid slightly expands, or just when pads wear out and there's not enough oil in the circuit to compensate. If when the adjuster is all the way in, you can still bleed the brakes fine, all good. Which is why on the Hope brakes you...

If you reset your pistons, pad retract is always relative to the braking surface so you have the same pad clearance regardless of rotor thickness. Increasing rotor thickness will only impact the clearance/dead stroke if you don’t reset the pistons, but over time as your pads wear it will work its way to the same spot.

Went to read the current rules and highlighted them below. Nothing about the team stuff has changed - it has been 15+5, and will continue to be. Rest your pitchforks on that. Protected riders going away good or bad, I don't know, I suppose the current top riders will have to put a bit more effort into qualies? The team kit color stuff has always excluded DH teams, guess they added DH back in. Nothing else really, Top 50 or National winner or continential top 3 whatever can compete makes sense - they want only the top athletes competing in...

As a resident bumbler I'm willing to guinea pig it for you. Will let you know once I have it and have tried it out but, sadly, my guess is that like 90%+ of all other stuff I buy, it will not change my riding experience in a meaningful way.

Always had a ton of noise using the Power or Power+ pads, no matter the rotor (Trickstuff HD, Formula Cura, Galfer Shark, Brakestuff, ...). They're really good, even if with very fast wear, but a bit noisy. Might also be due to the calipers I use, as a friend with Power pads on his Shimano XT wasn't making any noise ... Now that I think about it, could have been the calipers all along ... A 2nd opinion on the Sinter pads, they don't have the grabbiness of the Power+. Still good, but not that "anchor" feeling you can get...

Why does DMR continue to win these shootouts? I'll just say it....DMR pedals are garbage and I've got no fewer than 3 clapped out sets to prove it. They cost a fortune and only last for only a couple weeks before they start feeling/sounding terrible. Composite pedals from OneUp or PNW feel better, last longer and cost a fraction of the price of any pedal in this shootout.

Great article Paul! Im totally with you on this one, I think this 'underbiking' crap that has grown so much in popularity is mostly just bravado and general dumb assery. Same goes for gravel biking, 'look how much fun Im having! I have to walk my bike past every technical feature and I crash constantly!'
