Huh? He had a bad preseason injury a few years back I witnessed that was gnarly that cost home most of the 2022 season. Vital has the video. Last 2 years 13 World Cups Made every semi & final 2 Podiums 8 Top 10 Finishes Finished outside top 20 twice (Loudenvielle & Les Gets cluster Fokk this year) Hasn’t been outside Top 30 a single time. And that’s with switching from every single component of Santa Cruz/Shimano/Fox to Canyon/Sram/RockShox.

OK, we're fully derailing this, but let's conclude the discussion anyway 😀 The pivot is NEVER going to be above the line between the CoG and the rear axle. Imagine what that bike would like like. Here are some crude drawings I made to illustrate how anti-squat works. First, we have to understand what causes the bike the squat. The force introduced by pedaling makes the rear wheel turn, pushing backwards against the ground (blue arrow below). This causes the bike to accelerate (red arrow at the wheel). Because this force is applied way below the center of mass (the...

This video is awesome and you did it so quick in response to this thread! I’ve been using the CounterShox that was designed for moto (about 2 lb) and I’ve found that I can use it in a way to dampen small chatter like washboard bumps and sharp square braking bumps/rocks. Say something that is less than 6inches in height.. With the countershox removing the feel of those bumps from my hands, I’m able to run my LSC slightly stiffer and my HSC much stiffer than normal. This is giving me a more chassis stability and less pitching on and...

I filmed some video of my sketchy TMD attached to just a wheel this morning. Specfically tested it with the weights still attached but deactivated, as well as different amounts of weight and different tyre pressure. And yeah it makes a huuuuge difference having the correctly tuned TMD vs just adding weight. Just got to stitch the clips together and I'll post them up And yes the tyre contact patch is the only "true" unsprung mass - not to say controlling the wheel relative to the frame isn't important, but its ideal if you can reduce unnecessary vibration from transmitting...

So TLDR: The only part of your bike thats truly unsuspended is the contact patch of your tires, so putting one of these puppies literally anywhere else can yield benefits in different ways. They have been used successfully for years in Moto. My question is whats the difference between this and just added weights? Mass simply attached to the frame will reduce vibrations and make suspension work at a wider range of frequencies. Finally, I first proposed in the main tech rumors channel that you could reuse the weight of ebike components for something like this (it also proves that...

Yeah fine tuning the exact spring rates, mass and travel for the device would be pretty time consuming - get it wrong and you would make things worse or make a noisy shaker device that yeets itself off the bike if you hit just the right size bump.... I rigged up a janky device from bits around the shop that seemed to be in the right range and bolted it to a wheel this morning - will get some video of it in action later today

I wondered about how heavy the mass needed to be and also about the amplitude of the movement. I found some answers and formulas here: https://euphonics.org/9-4-3-the-tuned-mass-damper/

I imagine the TMD on the end of the chainstay is attempting to calm the additional small chatter from hits the suspension can't deal with. There's not much room inside of the damper to move so it's only going to be able to deal with movements inside the TMD's internal travel range. I'm thinking like tires bouncing or the chatter...

I'm with the comments, if only a photographer or two could go around the pits doing 30s interviews, then they could play them over their photos in some kind of slideshow. If they have nice photos but no audio, then just play the same muzak track for about 15 years. I can't believe no one has tried this before.

It depends on what vibrations you're trying to damp. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of braking bumps, then I think mounting to the sprung mass is the clear pick. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of the tires (tires are a largely undamped air spring), then mounting to the unsprung rear triangle would make sense. The seat tube is about 450 cm away from the rear axle, whereas the fork-mounted TMD is sitting almost directly inline with the front axle, so the front mount is in a much better position to damp suspension movement than...

My guess was Evil. They haven't seemed to do much of anything new in a while...unless I just missed it. Them shutting down would be a bummer. If I'm opening up my considerations for a future short travel trail bike to include the Superboost malarkey then I could potentially be talked into The Following LS. It seems like a really...

I would be on a ShadowCat right now, as would my GF... If they weren't like 6k to start. And secondhand ones go for like 3k minimum. Pivot has a lot of great aspects to their bikes, aside from the kinda weird sizing/size down thing. I'd probably ride a medium for their models, not sure.

picked up a Blur with a 120mm Pike this spring to compliment my 160mm Bronson, and have ended up riding it probably 70% of my rides this year. you certainly lose out on top end speed in the chunk, but tbh, it's so much faster everywhere else and so much fun riding a bit more on the edge. I used to be a fairly die hard hardtail rider so will admit its in my wheelhouse, lol. Great for keep the skills honed for when you jump on the longer travel rig!

Another option I only just remembered is Pivot. Their Trail 429 is "happy" to be run as a mixed wheel bike. Their flip chip apparently does some adjusting that makes a mullet work well. They also have a headset cup which raises the front end to allow a full 27.5" bike to have the same geometry and bottom bracket height...

Yeah seeing Kona give up on 27 with the redesigns and even Marin is doing frame size specific wheel sizes now instead of full range... I've just accepted dual 27 is basically done. It's basically just gonna be MX for smaller sizes, maybe a dual 27 for smalls here and there. So i'm gonna have to take whatever MX style bike that isnt enduro/AM and just live with it. I mean which I will happily do that Stump was a BLAST and I wish they basically sold it in MX config isntead of... I guess you have to simply buy...
