9/24/2024 8:00pm The Sidekick uses a 45T ratchet ring that translates to an 8 degree "traditional" engagement. The degrees on the pusher are reflective of just the pusher movement itself. So, if we are talking the total possible degrees: the 12 degree Pusher setting would be 12-20 degrees, the 15 degree Pusher setting would be 15-23 degrees and the 18 degree pusher setting would be 18-26 degrees. It's important to remember that those are the numbers on paper, but in actual use there are constant suspension inputs, freewheeling that is resetting the pusher back to zero, and a few other intricacies. We...

9/24/2024 7:58pm I completely agree with you on the inflation stuff. Numbers can be scary to onlookers when they have memories of smaller numbers when the reality is those numbers are somewhat in line with inflation (like I mentioned, human brains are so dumb and that's another good example). I'm should have been more clear in saying I think they'll continue to...

9/24/2024 1:00pm Right now the market fell out of mid and low end sales post covid. Top of the line stuff is probably chugging along just fine, as the target market is relatively recession immune, so we're going to see the eggs go into that basket for a while.

9/24/2024 12:27pm I think we're entering into a new pricing scheme in mtb. And it's happening because human brains are so dumb. Bikes are going to - over time - be priced higher and higher and higher and higher until ebikes and meatbikes (my favorite term for non-e-bikes) are almost the same price. Then mtb riders will start looking at ebikes more...

9/24/2024 11:31am Your assessment couldn't be further from the truth. I live in 87 year old home in an old neighborhood within walking distance of downtown. Most of my shopping uses no bags and no receipts. I drive a small hatchback from 2007 because the gas mileage is good, it's a smaller car so it's safer for those around me, driving it...

9/23/2024 10:45pm funny you mention the Y160E, I didnt like the demo bike i tried. Currently on the new Marin Alpine Trail E2 with the bosch and its a damn good bike, Bought both the E and steam bikes together, they are both seriously good bikes and rare to find an Emtb that feels similar to the normie bike.

9/23/2024 10:43pm It works as advertised for the most part. There are still scenarios where pedal kickback can be encountered, but they should be pretty rare. Let's consider the current generation Nomad for an example. The suspension has to compress about 80mm to get 18 degrees of pedal kickback. Because you are always guaranteed the same amount of slack in the hub, on any compression smaller than this it does make pedal kickback impossible to encounter. If you are compressing your suspension more than 80mm, it then becomes a question of how fast is the shock moving when you hit the 80mm...

9/23/2024 11:44am Dumb ideas: TMD in helmets or on a belt around the waist? A lot of crazy stuff happens when people and bodies get bounced around. What if we calmed the body and let the bike get a little crazy? Or maybe on the fork and waist? A calm body with shoulders and hips pointed in the right direction certainly does...

9/23/2024 12:04am Looks like BOS Suspension is back on track with its MTB range: https://www.vojomag.com/news/bos-suspension-revient-avec-une-nouvelle-g… -> Idylle DH fork / Idylle SC (now named Kyll) (39mm stachions anyone?) / Deville + a DJ fork (the USD Obsys should be back too -oh word I'm hoping for a SC version) -> Void / Syors / Stoy shocks as well -> aaaannd surprise surprise, a 2 or 4-pot braking system is in the works (using shimano pads)

9/20/2024 12:07pm On the note of disengaging hubs and pedal kick, so long as whatever drive mechanism you have can automatically engage when you pedal forwards, it's impossible to prevent it from causing pedal kick. The drive mechanism, whether it be hub or BB based, can't differentiate between the chain getting pulled on due to you pedaling and the chain getting pulled on from the suspension compressing. Riding backwards is a little different in that you can use the fact that the hub is rotating backwards relative to the axle to disengage the hub.

9/19/2024 9:25am Its interesting you bring up the Balance. I have one built 180/170, coil, burly. I also have a Pivot Switchblade. For the majority of my trails in Durango, which are mostly singletrack, blue or black rating I prefer the Switchblade. It pedals better, corners snappier. The Balance on a blue is so boring, it hates it. But when I get on that Balance on a proper black or higher trail downhill its so fun, not necessarily faster, but more fun. It's just so heavy uphill that I just don't grab it as often. The % difference in bikes is typically...

9/18/2024 2:04pm This is exactly my point. I know some stuff and both shops know that I'm not 100% ignorant and yet they're making these disparate recommendations. Imagine someone going in to a shop without a fistful of knowledge and relying on a shop to help them pick "the damn bike that suits your trails." Both of those shops would have put...

9/18/2024 12:00pm I can tell its starting to get colder and rainier in much of the Northern Hemisphere
We are over complicating this, for sure. The reality is you can ride any number of bikes down a trail and have fun. There is no such thing as "the perfect bike". Vital tends to skew a little more toward the racer, where bike choice matters (a lot) more, but even then I'd wager a good racer could likely put in about the same result on any number of good bikes with various amounts of travel (obviously within reason). Others have mentioned it...
