" In all fairness I think speed+style became a bit stale" I don't think I personally ever really got it. I love racing, I'm glued to the DH and XC. I'll even watch the weird niche things like urban eliminator. And I'll watch the slope/freeride competitions in a state of confused awe at how intricate the tricks are. But speed and style tried to combine elements of both to end up with something not as good as either. It did tend to have good filming and production value, hope those guys and cameras (and budget) can be relocated to the...

In all fairness I think speed+style became a bit stale. Early on it was quite fun, but courses got shorter and more flow-y and the points for each trick became pretty well defined resulting in min-maxxing on the jumps. The event lost that spark it had... Oh and they kept building the Whistler course so that the jumps faced the afternoon sun, then ran events in the afternoon. Why? Blind the riders and the spectators? What? At least by cancelling the event I won't have to complain about that again this year. I'm always curious what new events in MTB...

I dunno if wb is brilliant or stupid or brilliantly stupid but I’ll be here to watch the whole shithouse burn. In the meantime, an invitational Redbull series could be siphoning viewers. Seems like crankworx could simply add a really we’ll produced enduro series and boosh: wb lost money. Maybe that’s not how it goes, maybe there is some crazy high level production and wb flips World Cup dh into an incredible (tv centric) product and prints money selling it back to Red Bull or NBC, and maybe just maybe it’s for the better long term. But either way, I’m...

For similar money you could go to any number of boutique steel bike mfg's and get a custom sized steel bike, that would be infinitely cooler than any Trek would ever be. Support those little guys out there making rad stuff

It (subjectivity) is the downfall of almost every sport at some stage. It has ruined Rampage. Ruined slopestyle. Ruined what feels like the majority of the Olympics. As soon as you introduce subjective measures, EVERY decision will be wrong.

OTB podcast just dropped an interview with Lachie Stevens-Mcnabb. No juicy team rumours but that kid has a good head on his shoulders. So many references to we or the team or The Union - obviously aware of the support and role of the team to get him to where he is.

Loris is not mucking around, he’s got himself onto an absolutly dominant team for next year. Hopefully there’s no clash of the titans with the big personalities. After his stripes this year, next year should be a supreme one. All rumours.

Maybe it's been discussed already, but what are the requirements to be considered a team? Do all the rider need to be on the same frame sponsor? Do they need to share a minimum number of sponsors? (I.e. could Gwin and Neko be on the same "team" but ride different frames?

This is a great opportunity for an out-of-industry team to come together. Imagine a Fordyota / WD-40 type team with Gwin, Neko's crew and another good, but not top-15, team. Multiple frame sponsors under one organization, great media reach for adverts, and if done right could go toe-to-toe with the big teams. There's got to be quite the war raging behind the scenes right now for those #10-15 team spots. Banking on a wildcard seems risky, to say the least.

Mountain biking has grown in popularity, dirt and rocks are hard, young men don’t have great risk assessment abilities combined with that with the crazy dopamine hit you get when things go right will mean there will be more worse consequences sometimes.

Avoiding big jumps has worked for me in the last years. I'm reaching 50 in 2 months, have broken a elbow dirtjumping at 28 and a tibia 5 years ago on a XC ride when a friend touched my front wheel on a high speed fireroad. Also a mild concussion landing a small drop head first from a muddy glove sliping the grip somewhere in the mid 00s. I guess for 35 years of mountain biking, including 20 years racing DH, it's not that bad a result. Having nothing to prove and trying to ride fast without going out of control works...

so I read through the actual published study (link here for anyone interested: https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/neur.2024.0103 ). As someone who works in a medicine adjacent field that is also a experienced cyclist, I found one surprising omission in the study - that there was no data on the experience level of those who experienced spinal injuries (especially given the inclusion of other population data - gender, age, marital status, employment). I get it from a medical perspective (an injury is an injury), but from a cycling perspective I think it would be beneficial to understand whether or not the injuries are occurring...

I haven’t been able to dig into the article, yet. I’d be curious if it includes a meta analysis that might detect trends in the factors around the incidents. Types of trails, experience level of riders, type of protection in use or not present, etc.. If we are going to try to mitigate risks, it would be helpful to understand factors that might increase or decrease it.

Some our local rippers / engineers came up with a very unique "axle-less" pedal. Machined here in Calgary, Alberta and testing in the rocky mountains. They use a big ol 6902 bearing for spinny duties. The pendulum (drop pedal) is super interesting. Void pedals (traditional flat) Pendulum pedals (12mm drop) "Our platform sits 12mm below the center of the axle. Most pedals place the platform 5mm or more above the center of the axle. This effectively lowers the rider's center of mass 17mm or more offering a significant stability, and control. During sudden decelerations, the pedal acts as a pendulum...
