11/12/2024 8:02am thanks for posting this. I always thought Bontrager tires were underrated. Been a fan of the SE4 for years. Even ran the SE5 and SE6 on my park bike last season with a decent level of success. I think Trek/Bontrager and Specialized both miss out of a lot of tire sales by not advertising and/or explaining changes to their lineup...

11/12/2024 7:46am I've went through a few fronts on my trail bike including Specialized Ground Control T7, XR4 Team Issue 2.4, Onza Ibex, Specialized Purgatory T9 & currently Schwalbe Tacky Chan UltraSoft Super Ground GC, is not great. It's no faster than other options with worse traction. The Ibex is just, so fast. But not quite enough traction as it wears even slightly. If speed is the primary concern and you don't mind replacing often (before you even see wear), this is your tire. If you are on the GC, switch to the Ibex. It's crazy how AM it looks, yet XC...

11/12/2024 7:42am bontrager's 2025 tire lineup/pr. on their site prices are $50-70. Bontrager drops two new enduro tires for the rough and rowdy [Waterloo, WI] – Today, Bontrager brought even more trail-charging prowess to its MTB tire lineup with two new tires built for rocky, rooty, and technical terrain. Engineered from the ground up, the all-new Bontrager Brevard and Galbraith tires are ready to rip with fresh tread patterns, construction, and compounds to keep riders planted and in control in loose, technical descents — all while fighting punctures from trail debris and pinch flats. Like the trail and XC tires added to...

10/17/2024 7:45am If memory serves the 1st gen Ohlins units had a one piece crown steerer with pressed in stanchions. Whoever it was, it went away quietly. Why? First guess is cost. A full length steerer and crown take up a lot of space in a mold, which means fewer pieces per run. Second guess is inconsistency. Flow paths and rates in the mold would need to be completely dialed for molten metal to flow and fill 100%ish correct. Any void or seam is a stress riser. Third guess is it is easier to manufacture a stronger steerer out of a better...

10/17/2024 7:44am Ha, fun reading! Great stuff people are talking and DSD is showing these issues in MTB space. Watching PeakTorque, Hambini and MapdecCycles videos on YT this isn't surprising at all. Bike manufacturers inability to adhere to dimensional tolerances and QC their products is the sole reason press fit bottom brackets were so hated. Hell, I don't even think most product managers in the industry know what dimensional tolerance is. Make people overwhelm with features, shiny stuff, grams, compliance and stiffness claims, and them sell them shit so OFF, it negates any of the mentioned advantages. From my own garage: -...

10/17/2024 7:43am All RS forks I've tried had no mid stroke spring support, too fast HSR when setting the LSR to my liking. All fox forks were harsh. That's boxxer 35, zeb, fox36, 38gen1. Not tried the newest from the big 2 yet. But the ohlins forks have been bang on fresh out of box within clicker adjustable range

10/16/2024 6:39pm Or run an Ohlins or Manitou and get both a supportive air spring and great damping. The CSUs are still a problem, haven't met one from any brand that can last a full season of hard riding under my stunning mediocrity. I've accepted that CSUs are a wear item and I might just start buying spares when they're in stock. Bring on the enduro dual crowns.

10/16/2024 6:38pm related to the CSU..there is a case for them being 2 pieces.. I had a horrific case in summer (on a RFX38 m2 ) that would have destroyed many frames, but my canfield didnt flinch.. however I could not keep the headset properly tight after couple rides.. after several inspections at the bikeshop and then by myself, the steerer was bent (or pulled forward due to the impact) at the crown/tube interface, measured at 0.3deg, that was enough to throw off all surfaces around the headset.. I did replace it and have a new fork again.. The chassis is the...

10/16/2024 6:33pm speaking of lowers alignment and hub facing, have you seen the videos that DSD has posted recently on this topic?

10/16/2024 6:33pm I won't touch another pair of Zebs, 3 pairs warrantied for creaking CSU's (one also had tight bushings). For what Fox and Rockshox are charging, would expect the forks to be properly assembled and checked thoroughly: -Lowers alignment, do the hub clamping facings actually run parallel -Bushing binding, sort of linked to above and are they the right size. See a lot of tuners posting on social media with bushing binding and they just ream the shit of the bushings. Been running EXT's for the past 2 years, 4500miles on a set of ERA 2.1's and the csu started to...

10/16/2024 6:32pm here's a link to a bike I built not too long ago that had what Ohlins use to call the 'unicrown' CSU and the m.2 lowers and internals. The lowers had the bushings resized and custom damper tune. I think this combination is one of the best single crown forks on the market. https://www.vitalmtb.com/community/mscofield4/2020-knolly-fugitive?keyw…

10/16/2024 6:27pm Ohlins used to do this on the RXF 36 back in 2017-2018. I'm running one right now with the m.2 lowers and internals. They even included the crown race into the shape of the steer tube. Literally zero flex points for it to creak. It was brilliant in my opinion but too many people complained that they couldn't run their...

10/16/2024 6:21pm The hot thing now is 'damper forward' setup because of the new Grip X2 damper. That said, Rockshox's Charger 3.1 offers way LESS damping and more HSC if you want it (much larger adjustment range vs. 3.0). The issue with relying on the damper too much is a problem if you ride steep ass terrain like we do all the time in the PNW. Regularly riding down steep trails with grades 25-35%+ means a fork with a soft airspring/bad mid-stroke will be diving 2/3rds into it's travel before you even hit a bump. Not much suspension left when you do...

10/16/2024 6:20pm Yes there is a trend towards more damping, as previous generations were terrible (fox in particular) and people have finally realized higher damping is necessary for grip and stability (thanks Ohlins and Bruni). If you look at Rochshox and Fox, compared to their boutique competitors, Ohlins, EXT, Push, Avalanche tunes, Vorpsrung etc etc, the consistent thing is they all offer more damping. Which is why we've seen Fox and Rockshox slowly add more effective damping in each model year. As for the quality of the products, I think they're pretty darn solid all things considered. But I always tell people...
