FilipK Added a reply to Stem Length

2/12/2026 2:52am
I think changing dimensions messes with body positioning more than "steering-feel" hence this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apyTlND9Cuo It seems like the stem in this video reflects the difference between the basic geometries of xc and dh bikes. Just like any bike, going +- 20% stem length from stock is digestible and can help with fit. 1-2cm of comfort and CG shift closer...
I have two wheelsets for my trail bike: 1550g wheels + 2.4 Exo casing 2100g wheels + 2.4 Exo+ front and DD rear Overall, over 1kg of extra weight. There are a lot of variables that make them change the on-trail fell drastically. But with a heavier wheel, I always speed up the rear suspension rebound, otherwise it feels much...

Here’s a fun one: get a measuring tape and angle finder and go measure the geometry on your current bike. I guarantee you it doesn’t line up with the geometry chart. At least one number will be surprisingly off.

FilipK Added a reply to The great Headset Debate

@TheSuspensionLabNZ haha! During my research Canyon and Acros came up as offenders on a lot of occasions. But it was a Cannondale Topstone Al with a 41.8x30.2x6.3 45x45° bearing. For example, Enduro Bearings doesn't even make this one. I found PRO, M-wave, AIRE VELO. None are reputable bearing brand in my mind. OEM headset maker Tange Seiki is unavailable in...

It's the same story as Bottom Bracket. From a pure design perspective, INTEGRATED is better because of the lower stack up of tolerances more direct load path with fewer interfaces to rub/loosen/... Fewer parts to manufacture as well. From an experience and reality of poor manufacturing standards. EXTERNAL CUP seems like the best option. An indirect load path through the...

NOWHERE in the description of CeramicSpeed OPD Bearing (slt) bearings, I see it has ceramic balls in it. It only says stainless materials and solid lube. Ceramic balls on a steel race in an application with all the shock loading and no circles spun wouldn't be fit for purpose. No amount of material/surface treatments and marketing abbreviations would change that...

FilipK Added a reply to Poll: Have your buying habits changed?

I'm spending more but less mainstream products. There is fewer and fewer stuff coming out that interests me in cycling industry (Gravel, MTB ). I'm willing to spend more on stuff that makes sense to me. e.g. Custom hybrid drivetrains to have wider range with fever shifts. Good mechanical disc brakes on dropbar bike. DIY custom wheels. Tools to make...

Ha, fun reading! Great stuff people are talking and DSD is showing these issues in MTB space. Watching PeakTorque, Hambini and MapdecCycles videos on YT this isn't surprising at all. Bike manufacturers inability to adhere to dimensional tolerances and QC their products is the sole reason press fit bottom brackets were so hated. Hell, I don't even think most product...

FilipK Added a comment about feature Can a Pedal Kickback Denier See the Light?

9/19/2024 12:14am
While this does not seem like scientific enough test. It seems valid enought to make you change your outlook... At first glance it begs the question why the hell would we chase more expensive high engagement hub and than spend more money, weight, complexity by putting on a O-chain device. My deduction is, that being a sprung float and not just freewheeling float (like the hub in between teeth, or pawl-less), the O-chain can act like a chain tensioner for the upper half of the chain? JUST cassette tugging on the chain/cranks happens because of suspension movement and hub engagement...

oh that's cool. Never heard of that series. Would be a hoot to watch.

love this question! i'd make an IROC for downhill (at least what i remember IROC (international race of champions) from the 80's being...maybe it still exists?). X number of venues with X number of pre-selected racers run the same bike, suspension and tire manufacturer. each venue bike, suspension and tires change. brakes, cockpit and drivetrain can be whatever they want the series has no UCI affiliation. example - val di sole, everyone is on specialized, ohlins and maxxis - les gets, commencal, fox and schwalbe - MSA trek, rockshox and continental - last race of the season is riders choosing...

The one thing you’re missing is that the pedal body doesn’t bottom out on the bushing, it bottoms out against a flange on the spindle. After about 1 mm of lateral movement. The spring doesn’t need to be stronger.

FilipK Added a comment about press release DT Swiss Introduces All-New Complite Spokes

3/8/2024 11:26am
TEAMROBOT If you choose to go thin centre section (D light, competition race, revolution), they are going to wind up during building. Even J-bend. It's nice to build a wheel with bladed because, as you have to hold the spoke anyway, it doesn't wind at all. Especially with those DT Swiss holding tools. Any movement of the spoke key, results in changing tension and has an immediate effect on trueness rather than a twist and a ping later. You can of course do the same with a round spoke holder as well. Bit more cumbersome, maybe a bit cheaper. In...
