In hindsight, my choice of the word "significant" was poor. To statistically validate this claim, we would need to collect a lot more data and then use some inferential statistics (e.g., null hypothesis testing). But I think I agree with you, that there is enough in this exploratory analysis to draw some conclusions. I also agree that riding what you believe in is a smart choice due to the psychological benefits alone. I think where this type of testing can really shine is for top level riders who are looking for marginal gains. But who knows what more testing will...

Great post! It would also be very interesting to see the results of low pressures aligned with the average recommendations and the high pressures above that. My observations over the years have seen a lot more riders with pressures higher then what is recommended.

Absolutely excellent post. Obviously you're correct in that it isn't statistically valid across all variables but I do think it is thorough enough to draw a valid conclusion given the outside testing and holistic work that likely led to the an initial hypothesis of slower being faster as a general rule (because the lack of learning/repeated runs needs to allow for more mistakes). The other conclusion I drew from it is that you should also ride what you believe in as the differences aren't likely to be that significant either way. We all know the theory: lower tire pressures mean more grip, and higher pressures roll faster. But when it comes to real-world speed, which one really wins? I've wanted these brake tests to be run in the opposite format as itll be more relevant to the user. ie , run the dyno at say 200Nm and see what lever force and distance is required to stall in say 2.5 seconds. This should tell a better story as lever geometry will be considered in the results. As an end user I'm more interested in how much hand force is required rather than comparing max figures. Does the lever swing 10 or 25mm? These factors contribute more to ride feel and use.

Andrew Major at NSMB was messing around running the MT410 MCs on other calipers (Shim or Mag, I can't recollect) some time ago with positive results, even preferring them to the servo wave MCs. I've had a hunch that servo wave added into the wandering bite point of Shimano brakes, not the full culprit but just another part of the issue. I think it's a triple combo punch of that, the caliper piston material causing retraction issues, and the fluid weight causing cavitation issues. I had a set of SLX crap out spectacularly and rebuilt the MCs with the non-series...

For me, this is exactly why there's more to a brake than raw power. As a Brit, I'm supposed to love Hope brakes. I had a set and really wanted to love them, but for me the lever is a littlle too sharp/square around the hook. The V3 lever has a better shape (again, for me). I'm not unhappy with Hope brakes, but I can choose from my favorite parts, so I do. As an aside, I saw a company making CNC levers for Sram brakes. To me the stock lever is one of the best things about Sram brakes...

And simply if you lose a couple kilos, its less weight your legs need to support, more energy left to sprint, as he was talking about being more tired in the runs. How I understood what Loic was saying that he just needs to lose a couple kilos to maintain better weight/strength (could even use road term watts per kilo) ratio to battle Jackson in his own terms of being that "strong bulky rider still". Him losing those kilos isn't something that no one is going to even notice on TV screen.

If I were a pro, I'd prefer to be the lighter rider. Less mass = less stress on components, less load on the tires, and better ability to change direction/accelerate/decelerate. The benefits associated (fewer broken parts, more cornering grip, flickability) would, IMO, outweigh (no pun intended) the heavier rider's increased momentum over rough obstacles.

Lower height means a lower centre of gravity essentially. So Brosnan, Laurie & Jackson have a low COG = Turn better in science land. This all gets thrown out the window when you have Greg, Jack Moir etc who are well over 6ft with long limbs Taller riders have more leverage, can soak up bumps better, again in theory. This all gets thrown out the window when you have balls of muscle like Bulldog and Finn Isles. see where I'm going with this, In theory you can have a "perfect rider build" but I think the Cranial Matter up stairs...

My experience is that a 50mm stem and 20mm rise bars will have a longer steering offset (distance from center of topcap to the imaginary perpendicular plane of your hand position) than a 40 stem and 30 bars. For me, this longer steering offset gives a more oversteery feel, especially when making small corrections. Going to 35mm or shorter stem with 40mm or more rise bars feels really understeery. So with the longer steering offset your front is more likely to tuck and a too short steering offset will more likely make the front push. The 40 stem and 30...
