If you advance the piston past the timing port with the lever in the resting position, you have now created a fully closed system between the lever piston and the caliper pistons, where any expansion in fluid volume (as it heats up) will cause the caliper pistons to advance and thus, brake. It's the whole reason the timing port and the expansion reservoir exist to begin with. I mean that original post starts the conversation and its like ten posts long on the same page, think everyone should have the time and interest for it before modifying their brakes. Long story short, Hayes has set it correctly already so it doesn’t mess up the ports and close up the system.

At least another week for some of the "unknowns" to make official announcements. Moir is signing with the City of Bentonville and will have an ankle monitor on that prevents him from leaving the area. He'll be slanging pastries and coffee out of a smoko stand in the woods when not riding.

Any system that needs to be bled every couple of rides is either broken or was not properly bled to start, independent of the type of fluid.

I am also trying to understand this thought process. I can walk or drive to an auto parts store and pick up DOT fluid likely easier than trying to find the right mineral oil without having to order it online. I can bleed both my Hayes in 20 minutes with a spray bottle of alcohol on standby for immediate cleanup. It's too easy -- nothing more complex than using mineral oil.

You can get the correct DOT fluid in any automotive shop. For any DOT compatible brake. Good luck with that with mineral oil brakes. You have different oils WITHIN the same manufacturer (Shimano), let alone between manufacturers. I know I'm beating a dead horse at this point and derailling the thread at the same time, but sorry, I see ZERO benefits from using mineral oil vs. DOT fluid in brakes... If anything, also reading people's experiences about it, it's more complicated than anything, cleaning it up is a pain compared to DOT and the aforementioned issue of finding the correct...

Not correlated! I know that Alan, who's in charge of Enduro, is very committed. He is doing a lot of work behind the scenes to make changes that will help Enduro, I am excited for what he has in store. Excited enough to come out of retirement for a race or two in the future. Masters class is only a few years away for me.
