1/29/2026 12:17pm Hopefully lighter, too! I really liked the Tallboy, but it weighed basically the same as my Hightower.

1/26/2026 10:31am This is classic Forbidden and yes total niche. I always thought their bikes squarely target the BC style of riding. The mountain bikes with the high pivot and long stable geometry feel right at home where they are built. I love forbidden for this. These two frames are following the same ethos I believe. The Puritan makes perfect sense if you do interior BC "gravel riding". I day this in quotes because their definition of gravel is kinda different compared to the stuff we see in media. Someone I rode with in Toronto moved to BC and gave up mountain...

1/26/2026 10:30am I know this is an MTB site, but a flat-bar only gravel bike with clearance for only 50mm tires and built around a 50mm travel fork is wildly niche. "I want a gravel bike that's really only good on gravel roads and the absolute smoothest of trails, but I don't want drop bars because wind doesn't exist where I live and I'm never doing long rides where my wrists get tired holding the same spot on the bars all day." Seems like a very BC-only sort of gravel bike.

1/20/2026 1:43pm Thanks mate! The Hayes lever feel is certainly addictive. They make SRAM feel super stiff and Shimano's rather sloppy/a bit cheap (except for maybe XTR) which has a bearing). Bigger brake + smaller thicker rotors > small brakes and bigger rotors IMO (you then always have the option to run more rotor in standard sizes + less rotor warp/weight/brackets). The 1.95mm Hayes rotors are great but IMO every brake benefits from thicker rotors as brakes always feel worse (more lever throw) nearer end of pad life/more piston advanced). Trickstuff uniquely do 2.05mm (2.3mm's won't fit easily), both in heavy duty...

1/20/2026 10:01am Super tidy Element, love the mottled green with the tan-wall tires! Love to see some serious brakes on a 120mm bike. The Dominion A4/Galfer pad/Trickstuff rotor combo sounds pretty trick -- I've mostly run stock Hayes rotors and pads but starting to branch out to some other options.

1/12/2026 12:26pm This is a great discussion! A few things I'll add: 1. I'm pretty decent about servicing the lowers and replacing seals on my forks, and that's kept me out of any real trouble or premature bushing or stanchion wear for two decades of riding. It's not rocket science. A seal/wiper installation tool is a relatively cheap one-time purchase, but you can do it for free, too- I recently helped a friend set new seals by cutting out the inner ring from his old seals to make a crude setter tool for the new seals. So you can do the whole...

1/11/2026 3:57pm I've never ridden the Optic in either generation, but I have a few buddies who have had the pre-high pivot, and they loved that thing. With swapping a few parts here and there, they were able to get it light enough to XC and multi-day XC races without feeling over-biked (but racing in Squamish/Pemby/Revy would do that). One of them also threw a Cascade link on, and that was a pretty big game-changer for him. I don't really know what comes close to the old Optic. Part of me wants to say a Rocky Mountain Instinct, but that feels bigger...

1/9/2026 2:59pm I finally wrapped up my XT vs. XT brake test, here for your viewing pleasure - https://www.vitalmtb.com/features/comparing-shimano-xt-brake-performanc… The TLDR: - New brakes worked much more consistently. Never had any wandering bite point issues and the lever feel stayed solid in varying conditions. When I tested the new XTR brakes last year, I had a similar experience. I think the new oil/seals play a huge part in this, and the 'stiffer caliper' probably has some effect too. Don't @ me about - New reach adjust dial is a pain to turn IMO. I like the grip of the old one and...

1/9/2026 2:57pm Yup I agree with all of this - when setting up suspension that hasn't been serviced you run in to a wall quite quickly where its not possible to have decent comfort/grip as well as support/lively feel. Something freshly serviced has much less compromise I also made this graphic about how I picture suspension performance over time - I work on forks that I've serviced regularly for over 5 years and pretty much as good as new - its only once the service interval gets dragged out that they start to wear really badly. The effect is probably more noticeable...

1/9/2026 2:57pm Re: "knowing" when a damper needs service -- this might be a totally jank method, but an old-head suspension tuner once showed me how he liked to hand-cycle a damper rod, once it had been pulled out of the fork during a lowers service, and "feel" for any stiction, weird binding points, etc. You can "dyno" (to use the terms very...

1/9/2026 2:07pm I see your point, but to me that's like saying "How often do you change your tires on your car?" and all the answers are like "winter and summer", "every 30,000 miles" "every 80,000 miles", and "when they wear out". You wouldn't also add "every 30-60 mins" just because that's how often F1 or NASCAR drivers change their tires. I'm sure amateur DH racers service suspension more often than the average rider, but it's only the top level riders on factory teams that are servicing their suspension every few runs.

1/8/2026 5:48pm Fun fact - You can actually run the current HD6 as a full 29er, however tire choice is very limited, and you’ll chip the paint on the chainstay bridge. I think a Dissector from maxxis is about the most agressive tire that fits. Then again, take a Megatower or a Druid, and the clearance on those bikes with a Schwalbe albert isnt any better. A megatower has a sheet of paper of clearance running those tires.

1/8/2026 11:05am I wonder what this means for the other, less headline riders? Aaron said Mikey Delesalle was testing with him on Frameworks, and he appears in some of the photos. Also Frida Ronning is supposedly on Crestline based on the pod with Dak and his insta story. Crestline's team was owned by Gwin, so does this mean she will still be privateering, just with a frame sponsor?
