I will put it plainly. Big people on little wheels -> frames can accommodate their size => no practical advantage Little people on big wheels -> frames cannot accommodate their size => practical disadvantage There is a fundamental physical advantage for bigger wheels relative to smaller ones in mildly bumpy terrain (XC like). Smaller riders cannot practically access this advantage. There is no disadvantage to small wheels if everyone is on the same wheel size. This is the issue. UCI has regulated road bikes (and others) for decades, sometimes just to keep the classic bicycle aesthetic. It’s funny that they...

You have to consider absolute power as well, not just W/KG. On the road teams have talked about using a “compound score” which is W/KG * 5 minute power. Pidcock for example who is tiny and has greats W/KG gets outclimbed by guys heavier than him all the time and gets destroyed on flatter sections if he’s hitting the wind...

I would say no because you can get an optimal geometry (bar height, TT length, etc.) for all riders easier when you do not have to deal with packaging issues for being able to fit larger wheels into a XS frame.

This is what companies want. You need a new bike bag, a higher price train ticket, a new car, and a new house for your new 32” bike. The Consumerism dream.

Not going to lie, my heart dropped a bit reading that yesterday. Fingers crossed these last steps of reattachment take and he can make as full of a recovery as possible.

Speaking for the US only, cycling infrastructure is terrible across the country with only a few bright spots. I have commuted by bike for twenty years and have had so many near death experiences. Public transit in the US is also woefully underfunded and underdeveloped. That’s by design since the US political system has been corrupted by petroleum/auto money for nearly a century. (also add in distance and weather realities) And I could go on…

Spoken like a boomer core lord. That’s what the viral forums seem to have become though. Dario is actually a breath of fresh air in mountain bike media, same as Jason. His perspective is a welcome change from the usual safe, generic industry takes the rest of the media recycles time and time again.

For a while, half the people I rode with were on one Forbidden model or another, and honestly, those frames have some of the worst QC and overall design execution I’ve seen in that price range. Unless it’s the bike’s very first ride, they creek like crazy, and the suspension pivot hardware is borderline laughable. A buddy of mine—who posts here pretty often—ended up getting his frame replaced under warranty after endless battles with headset creaking. Forbidden eventually admitted the carbon had ovalized. No, Specialized isn’t the most exotic brand out there, but I definitely wouldn’t put Forbidden anywhere near...

The thing is, I'm not sure they are releasing "duds" per say. In my main riding group, about 1/3rd of people are on current gen Epics. I also see a large number of SJ15s around the trails, too. And then when I start counting e-bikes, Specialized is the brand I see the most of at my local trails. Even when I traveled to bike recently, saw some more SJ15s and a Levo. Edit: when I was back visiting my parents last month, I saw a group ride with 8 people and to my recollection, all but 2 were on Epics...

Despite the downvotes, I can appreciate your questions on this, as they are inquisitive and are interesting to think about. People complaining about terms like poppy and playful make wonder why they ride bikes at all. Don’t get me wrong, there’s the challenge aspect for plenty of us, but isn’t riding supposed to also be about having fun? Or did you buy your $5k+ bike just as a form of conspicuous consumption? Also poppy is not solely a metric of mountain biking. Many snowboard companies actually grade their decks on how poppy they are. Skateboard companies too have experimented with...

A sub 1k full suspension bike isn't worth riding... especially so in 160/160 format where you can't hid poor suspension behind a firm feel with limited travel. The last FS i test rode in this bracket was a giant stance at ~1,600 dollars a hard tail would have been my choice in that price range. As @ervin321 mentioned... There aren't great examples left of niche markets being able to sustain affordability. Hell, same could be said of groceries. The path forward for bikes is relatively clear, just like it is if you're into cars, motorcycles or other gear based hobbies...
