My experience riding the 1001sentiers regional championship for the last 10 years. (Nicolai, Cure, Tordo, Dailly were all raised on this championship and Barel/Vouilloz won quite a few rounds) "Recos" were a huge problem in France a few years ago, races were intended to be run blind, and organisers often opened up 1-2 fresh cut tracks per round specifically as...

Jeebus that video is awesome, Commencal really filling in that empty hole where vital raws used to reside. Can we start a quickstarter to just send Amaury and FrixFrix around to the various WC tracks with 10 videographers?

Just read it in a French accent, it will make perfect sense! OK so I did proof read 'most' of it but in my defense I'm pretty much half French and definitely more than halfway towards fully senile, so there you have it. Guilty as charged. Now I'm wondering whether or not to fix it, I really like "direction angle more lying down" and am considering using the term in future reviews...

Sweet looking bike, but considering the geo and weight, wouldn't adding 10mm travel and unifying the range make sense? Just how extreme is the AM going to be next week?

Looks really nice, but there is a serious price creep going on, most of the models don't really count as "good value" due to some cheapish components. I guess they have to pay for those weekly sick videos and the massive DH team somehow!

I have a completely unsubstantiated theory that the equipment back then wasn't up to today's speed: wheelsize, suspension and tyres in particular have come a long way. Not sure the grip was good enough to handle the speeds that a longer bike would have allowed.

Eoin Added a reply to When/will enduro racing become as intense as DH?

Disagree entirely with the premise: Top guys in enduro are either guys who have won a DH WC race: Hill, Maes, Rude; or guys who grew up full enduro: Nicolai, Dailly, Tordo. Maybe there are some guys in the EWS top 20 that started riding pro late, and maybe they can compensate the relative lack of experience with fitness. But...

If you didn't hit your rear derailleur against anything on your ride, then you shouldn't have bent it. For example, I've had the same GX 11 speed rear derailleur for 3 years and I've gone through 1 frame and 3 rear wheels over the same time. You've got to be doing something wrong to bend your rear derailleur. Is your chain too short? If so your derailleur could be hyperextending and bending when you go deep into your travel. Are you dropping your bike on the driveside? Are you storing your bike in a place where children, dogs, people, or...

Everybody's different, but I notice a difference going from a really cheap, low-engagement hub to something with 36 to 44 points of engagement (like a Hope Pro 4 or DT 350 with 36t star ratchet). It is most noticeable on technical, climbs, where a really low-engagement hub can result in missing the timing of an important pedal stroke to get up something. But above 36ish points of engagement, I personally don't notice much of a difference. After having a few freehub mechanisms blow up on me of various brands, I think it's worth spending a bit more on a rear...

@teamrobot - dialed list except for hub engagement. if you're going from a bottom-of-the-line hub to something nicer, it's noticeable, if you have to pedal for speed or momentum. i'm not saying the upgrade has to be a $500 rear hub, but the difference between a super cheap rear hub found on a $1-$2k bike and a "good" rear hub with better engagement is legit. on budget rear hubs, i've had my foot blow off pedals (flat pedals, not clips) as i upshifted while pedaling on travsery portions of trail. the slack was just too great and the violent thud...

But that is part of the issue: if these are direct to consumer, then that is the final price outside of a sale. YT and Canyon get to advertise huge bargains because when they say $3000 it is $3000, whereas all the store brands advertise a bike for a lot more, knowing most customers wil get 5-15% off in store.

I don't think I have ever paid more than 60 euros for a tyre, specialised used to sell their tyres in shops for 35-45e (don't live near a spesh shop currently so don't know if that changed). With a small amount of browsing you can get top of the line Schwalbes or Maxxis online for under 60.

To answer your title question: not beyond mid-range GX/XT. Similarly for full bikes, I always go for the lowest or second lowest build and upgrade little by little. Regarding your actual points which are with regards to destroying rims and derailleurs. I used to destroy all my equipment in record time, the biggest thing that changed this was switching to...
