I'm at work, a colleague comes over to me.... he see's me concentrating really hard. He says "oh you must be doing something important, I'll come by later" Little does he know I'm trying to figure out these cryptic team rumor illustrations about dudes riding bikes. You are totally right! I owe a ton to Donny and the Southridge crew for everything they've done over the years, both for my racing career and the racing scene in SoCal. I've always been shocked at the names that have come out of Fontana, considering the terrain. But that does go to show how having solid competition raises the bar for everyone.

@Jason_Schroeder lucky for you, Raaw is now offering UDH dropouts for the Madonna, but it looks like they might have a new version coming next month. If I was in the market for a new bike that would be at the top of my list, but I really can’t justify replacing my Knolly Chilcotin.

That is great news! I know they have been teasing the V3 coming soon. I'm definitely going to shoot them an email and see if we can work something out! I love the approach they have with their bikes focusing on durability and simplicity. Also, they have usable stack heights for tall riders.

Not all "poppets" are equal. You can design a valve to fit the same space, that resembles a poppet valve but isn't digressive to the same degree as an X2 or CCDB shock. See the cone valve/spool valve discussion a few pages back. The design of the main piston makes a difference too - a large, solid (or close to) piston driving a ton of oil will tend more towards digressive, but a smaller piston with progressive opening shims will be more linear. Either way, you can make different valves with wildly varying damping rates, and for different reasons so...

On the contrary, if you’ve got the time and patience I would highly recommend doing the math instead of using linkage. You will learn a lot this way. Kind of like it’s good to learn calculus before just using calculators to solve calc equations. It probably sounds more daunting than it is, but leverage ratio is just the derivative of y axle position so you can solve for axle position as a function of shock stroke and whatever other dimensions you might be playing with and then you’ve got everything. Once the equations are there it is way way faster...

I think Creo/ProE is used by lots of the big boys (and Asia) due it's powerful surfacing functionality. To make those carbon frames purdy. But it is absurdly expensive, last time I checked it was something like $15-20k a seat, with $3-$4k a year renewal cost. Solid Works is less expensive, but not by much. A really good basic CAD/CAM package is Fusion 360. You can get it monthly for like $70, they even have a free 30 day trial, and have tons of on-line tutorials to help learn it. I had never used Fusion before (but do have 15...

This, i think, is actually a moto-component. Obviously, there’s no problem to figure out how to mount it on a mtb. Mic Williams and his buddies at Trinity think pretty open-mindedly and do come out with some pretty neat solutions for their bikes (and not only theirs, actually!).

So far, I am impressed. I only have a few rides on it, but it was very easy to setup. The factory recommended settings have been a good starting point. The breakaway force is minimal for an air shock which I am a fan of, mid-stoke feels well supported with good range of adjustments, and I haven't had any harsh bottoms out. It simply works well, which means I haven't had to think about it much. I'm going to do a day bracketing to see if I can get more out of it, I'll report back afterwards. My only complaint...
