8/15/2025 2:00pm The rules for DH are almost as simple as saying that whoever rides a bike from the top to the bottom fastest while staying in the track limits wins, and I love it. Any type of hyper specific equipment rules like those in road racing or ski racing just limits the innovation that's required to be the fastest. If somebody wants to wear ankle weights or put oobleck in their tires because they think it's better, then they should let them. Let the fastest rider win. Shake weight in the steerer tube? Sure. Hamster bottle for the rear brake? Have...

8/14/2025 9:09am Awesome, an underground racing app would be pretty fun. -Invite other riders, have the course open for a specified length of time, send out the results to all participants when the event closes. Have the means to run a series as well with leader board. Completely private. -Have an easy way to mark the start and finish locations with GPS, I'll typically stake them physically with a flag. Riders know it starts and ends at the flags. The track is unique for each event and does not have to exist prior. -Be able to easily add split times/locations to the...

8/12/2025 10:29am (I don't really want to comment on California cuz it's such an outlier, despite being a huge part of the MTBing industry... but I would not describe many of the e-bikers here as veteran enthusiasts. If anything, the reverse is true. But we're also getting to a point where EVERYONE is on an e-bike.)

8/12/2025 10:29am Are any bikes other than e-bikes selling at close to historical numbers? I think this dealer might be mis-diagnosing what's going on. Looking at who's out on the trails, the ~130mm bike's sweet spot has always been the casual rider who wants a chill experience. These days those riders are on eebs. This kind of goes back to Jeff's monster analogy. I have a different take than he does. Human-powered MTB has become niche and ebikes are where the market has moved to. The market is fine, the monster is still there, it's just changed.

8/12/2025 10:26am i was gonna go with a title that rolls off the tongue like 'Jeff Brines megathread for riders who want to understand the bike industry, and general economic advice regarding the market too'

8/12/2025 10:17am Linkedin actually! I have job alerts for bike companies, not this specific job, which LinkedIn also says I'm not a strong match for; which I am certainly not. Posting on a forum is definitely not journalism though.

8/11/2025 8:48am The Path in Orange County had a fairly strange scenario, that seemed like a drawn out location swap more than anything. Basically they made a new location, that would function as the 'normal' bike shop... And the old location became an 'outlet' store to sell clearance items and it just had a shit ton of stuff for a while. They recently blew most of that out, whatever is left, and are now closing the old 'outlet' store, saying there is not enough inventory left over to justify the location. Again, it really just sounds like a prolonged location swap where...

8/7/2025 10:12am @andyjr77 - i did say, "I would figure that Instagram, Tiktok and FB account for social views, too and who knows what a random viral post can account for." - no doubt those platforms add up in different ways. the value a sponsor sees in those is beyond me. i realize the marketing person reporting numbers can make them sound impressive to the bosses, but do those "views" move a needle when it comes to actually selling a product? i don't know. IMO the paid platform broadcast views vs youtube views is the real crux of the discussion. the numbers...

8/7/2025 10:11am Social views will include all social media platforms, long and short form. That 225M social is entirely plausible on that basis. Reminder: these kind of reach/views stats are actually more important for sponsors (especially non-endemic) rather than core fans as it feeds into paid/earned media views matrix. In terms of WBD cumulative channel views of racing, with 122M+ subscribers, 15M doesn't seem unreasonable, especially if you factor in clips appearing in other shows etc and if you're applying either YouTube's 30s or Meta's 3s threshold to count as a view. The smart team managers/owners/sponsorship heads will be building this into...

8/7/2025 10:10am I wish I could believe these numbers - maybe its true, but my Bugs-and-Fudd-ometer tells me its BS. Literally no one I know subscribed to Max (or whatever) to watch this, and I'm only watching b/c my wife happens to already be subscribed... that's anecdotal & meaningless, sure, but I don't see how WB can be attracting massive #'s when this is hardly promoted. Even in the Sports tab of Max you wouldn't even know DH existed unless you search for it. Still - the riding has been world class, bc the riders are world class regardless of what Bugs...

8/7/2025 10:10am Hahaha "They are claiming their paid channels have significantly more views than the highlight shows on the most popular (and free) streaming platform in the world." @sspomer, well put. I agree, this reporting seems off. Anecdotally, most people I know now ONLY watch the highlights because its free. Which is a shame because the racing has been bonkers these last few years.
