I tried that a few times and found it severely impractical as it pushed the helmet forwards, often off the forehead (forwards). Granted, I was (and am) running a POC helmet at the time and had it tightened around my head quite a bit, forming a lot of free space between the back of the shell and the adjuster, which then gave it the space to be moved forwards. A full face sits on the head differently and more fully for it not to be a problem.

My experience - - I'm 49 and have been mountain biking for 28 years - I ride for fun, mental health and fitness. Descent/gravity oriented - I'm typically injured from mountain biking 3+ months a year - Pre e-bike I was riding ~3 days a week, taking days off in between for leg recovery. Being "core" has got to be similar to it's musical definition. Shops that work and create that DIY / Grassroots scene are core. Whether its events, group rides, classes, sponsoring local activities, trail work. For individuals it has got to be the same. Go to grassroots events, go fix your local trails, donate your old shit to a bicycle kitchen. If you aren't interacting with your local scene it doesn't really matter how long you have been riding, can you really call yourself core?

It's hard not to center this on your own experience, but I'd say, minimum, if you've made it 3-5 years riding some kind of MTB (CC, Downhill, Enduro, Park, Dirt Jump), and it's your main hobby, you're a core mountain biker. Does it need to be anymore complicated than that? I mean, if you can't be "core" after doing basically nothing other than riding for half of a decade, then we've got some serious gate-keeping going on in this sport. As far as I know, the Shimano motors all use similar physical dimensions.. Batteries could be the biggest hurdle, but Gobao offers at least 4 different Batteries currently. So, there's a chance one of them could work..

Came here to basically say this. Big picture, if Shimano does bow out, my bet is a Chinese company (maybe Gobao, maybe someone else) steps in. Gobao seems far less averse to reverse engineering motors (I am riding one now, seems very similar in a lot of ways to the EP8 - just better). Did Shimano only make one variant of each motor or are there a high number of packagings (dimensions they fit into)? If its the latter, it gets tricky, if its the former, bet on something coming if Shimano stops aiming at eebs.

What about the the rumor that the Gobao will bolt into existing Shimano motor mounts? Plus they have Shimano style displays available. That potentially puts an option out there for people who want an updated motor for their Shimano bike.. Definitely interested to hear if someone has actually done it..

It'd be interesting to know what your all-in cost is for a new Shimano motor and battery, and what's even available for replacement for that specific bike.
