I think we have to look at what the IXS series has done. That's a multinational series that spans somewhat the geographical size of the US, and seems to have proper retention and market share. One of the biggest problems the US has always had is that it's incredibly expensive to compete cross country in the NW Cup as well as Neko's series AND the ESC. Maybe we are now seeing that there's not enough sales of DH bikes to justify the cost of making molds for a carbon frame? Especially for a minimal gain in performance...

Forgot to update this. I found the culprit of this problem on my buddy's fork (who was experiencing the exact same issue as the OP) - grease had migrated into the negative chamber of the air spring. Once we cleaned it out and relubed the air spring in full it was back to as it should be. So....I'd say I was wrong about bushings/seals/oil bla bla bla. The bummer is pulling the air spring apart requires a few special tools. (eBay them)
