3/30/2026 12:57pm Unfortunately I'm an idiot, so I'll answer your question even if it is sarcastic. I found a known value that's easy to measure, the rear brake rotor. I set it to 203mm (as mentioned in a bike check from my memory) 16.2cm = 6.377 inch, rounded up however the app used rounds things and also not a perfect angle. Closest match for phone size would be a Iphone 16/17 pro max at 16.3 cm or a google pixel 9/10 at 6.3 inches. I'm going to go with the iphone 16/17 pro max. I should touch grass. I'm also either going...

3/30/2026 12:57pm I’ve actually noticed the same thing before too. Maybe the tighter kits just make it visible easier, but it’s funny seeing pro atheletes competing at the highest level with a giant phone crammed into their tiny pocket.

3/30/2026 12:45pm Meh. I see a decent number of eebs going up lifts nowadays, but not many under who you'd think of as 'core' riders. It's just another segment to which they can cater. Ebikes aren't acutally a replacement for chairlifts in the major parks. A few years ago I rode an ebike up Sun Peaks (600m vert in bike park). If I went straight up in turbo, I'd get one lap at most. In the lesser modes, it would be at most 2 laps and certainly over an hour of climbing for those 2 laps. Compare that to the chairlift where...

3/30/2026 12:43pm Nowadays ski area general liability insurance is by no means a "one stop shop". They'll look at things like skier visits, claims history, terrain profile and what activities they offer outside of skiing. Hardly a flat underwriting process like yesteryear. Bike parks 100% drive an increase in premiums, and from what I understand, the increase is in proportion to the size of the park (so you build more, you pay more) and just like skiing, number of visits/injuries etc. BTW - Thanks to everyone for checking out my monster Vail post. I know its a touch tangential to bikes, hence...

3/26/2026 1:20pm The 203 is a remanent of when we measured rotors in inches going back to the OG Hayes days. 203 = 8"

3/24/2026 7:28am Just added a new post to my substack for those interested. Here is the synopsis... The Bad (mostly covered here) • The factories in Taiwan are getting way fewer orders. • Canyon full year 2025: revenue down 7%, EBITDA down 34% • Knolly news (see above) - one thing I didn't mention is the mechanics here. Getting your LOC called sucks, and it extra sucks when your business has been contracting. I do wonder what the business actually looks like, how big the delta was (how much cash did they need) and if they were forecasting a profitable year. I...

3/20/2026 10:12am A lot of people use these kinds of bikes for XC races. Some races like XCOs probably no one carries anything. Other races like Moab Rocks probably most people are carrying something on at least one of the days because the risk of a flat tire is so high racing mostly blind with XC tires in Moab. Other races like BCBR require you to carry certain things (but they don’t enforce it). The big advantage of the on bike storage vs just having everything in your jersey pocket/camelbak is it helps keep you cooler, which keeps your performance up. Like...

3/20/2026 10:09am Lycra is a name brand of elastane, also known as spandex, and they also have a few other technical fibers or treatments in their portfolio, such as Coolmax. I doubt the bankruptcy will have much of an impact beyond the immediate disruption, as there's no shortage of companies that make an equivalent fiber, both on the affordable and premium end. They also went through some kind of default in 2022 so this isn't their first bump in the road.

3/17/2026 7:49am I'm here to defend (good) trail associations. I was the first Executive Director of Evergreen MTB Alliance in WA State in the early 00's and then on the exec committee of the board for another 10 years. We (both paid crews and volunteers) built tons of tech trails, and yeah a lot of flow trails and jump lines for the masses. I think a good balance between the styles. Behind the scenes we fought HARD to keep open the unsanctioned areas - areas I rode and may or may not have spent countless hours digging at
That fight wasn't...
