I know this has been talked about a bunch but its kinda wild experiencing it yourself. Its amazing how much ramp the air in the fork lowers causes. I had my air cap off to change some volume spacers and I pushed down on the fork out of curiosity and it was difficult to get the fork to full compression with just the air in the lowers.

Bike packing forks usually seize up due to having copious amounts of rain on them and pushing past the seals, so even with relatively low k's or hours they will be in a rough state. Also if there is no visible leaking, there is usually a similar amoutn of oil in the lowers than when it was serviced, it will just be very degraded. In general, more oil = better and will last longer but in a lot of forks the air spring side has very little space in the lower leg and any more than the specified amount will...

In the early days at least, yes they used the Spire hardware. That was actually something we had recommended since at lower volume it’s easier to just buy existing pivot hardware. It’s one of those things you that is super efficient to run in volume but not so much in low quantities. Of all the Horst link bikes I’ve messed with, that pivot hardware kit has been one of the easiest to live with. You aren’t gaining any performance from it, though. I’d imagine at this point they are using their own hardware though.

I would bet my whole fleet of bikes on it still being plastic bullshit that will break when a pixie farts 2 miles away. I think the only person more stubborn than the twinloc guy at Scott is the "maguras must be plastic bullshit" guy.

I think transition simply believes there is a certain quality in quantity in bike frames. A lot of riders will never notice their slightly misaligned rear end or put the forces on the bike to really cause an issue. On the other hand they sell a lot of crash replacement frames and honor a lot of warranties. They need to store/ship those extra frames. And a slightly cheaper frame makes that affordable to them and the consumer. I don’t think your average transition rider is looking for the best frame. Recently learned how hands-off Transition is for manufacturing. They basically do the industrial design and pivot layout then the factory does the rest. No in-house composite engineer or stress analysts at least double checking what the factory is doing. I know they’re not unique in this, but they’re charging a lot for what is basically a Transition shaped catalog frame. They give a lot back to the riding community here, so as a local it’s a little easier to stomach, but if I were outside Washington it would be a much harder sell.

In my experience (Deore 12 speed) Microspline hubs get just as chewed up by the cassette as the old HG ones did. What’s the point of that?

I've sold a small handful of XTR bikes this year, and we've had a fair number of them come back with broken rings. We have near constant complaints about Shimano brakes being significantly louder than other models, and have yet to manage a consistent way to quiet them down, even after investing in a bedding machine. Shimano went proprietary for their freehub even though it was extremely obvious that they could have used HG or paid into XD. Their road 12s systems are on HG still. The new "UDH" achieves nothing.
