How about the days of Freecaster.tv? Or we back to recording races from OLN on VHS? Or back to waiting for the next month's edition of MBA to come out to see who was winning at the races. You kids don't know how good you have it.

Not buffering.  Before I went to watch men's I went back through the women's.  The blur is literally the video.  It blurs at the same points each time.
So wouldn't that mean they're not storing the video on the actual camera & lag will put the rest of the data into the completely stored file once uploaded?  It's as if the production booth is only storing the live streaming wireless data & not bothering to use the master video.

An EXTREMELY simplified explanation of why video gets blurred:

The more detail in an image, the more data is required to describe that image. There's a limit to how much data cameras can capture in real time, how much they can send in "real time," how much broadcasters can send in "real time," how much internet service providers can receive and send in "real time," and how much your TV provider can send in "real time." The downstream folks tell the upstream folks how much they can handle. The on-site broadcast is assembled in real-time and sent to the folks who will be streaming it.

The way to work inside those limits is to use a video codec (encoder/decoder) that evaluates images and decides which data is the least important and can be thrown out. That has to happen in real time before it gets out of the camera, and then at the broadcast booth, and potentially again at your TV provider's "channel."

The quickest way to reduce data required to describe a video image is to blur it. Less detail means less details to describe.

Fast-moving, high-contrast, non-repetitively-colored images require the most data. They use footage of the sun's reflection on choppy water as a test of how capable a codec is.

DH mtb - especially in dappled-light situations - is very data-hungry. It captures lots of details because of the tracks and trees and grass and riders all moving very quickly. Being best-presented in a somewhat closely-framed image further magnifies how fast all those things are moving. But we have a limit on how much data we can use to describe the images so the data gets tossed out and the images blurred. Most of that blurring happens as the broadcast is being assembled (in real time) and piped out of "the booth."

I don't know what sorts of data rates we're looking at these days, I've been out of the video world for a while now and it moves pretty quickly, but that's at least and explanation of why it's blurry.

TL;DR:
Crisp, beautiful images captured by the camera get destroyed (by blurring) because of the limitations of data throughput at a thousand bottlenecks along the broadcast chain until those images make it to your face.

That makes sense. I assumed the cameras functioned like a live streaming GoPro or FaceBook from your phone.
The "LIVE" video you're sending over wifi/mobile data will blur for people live if the feed is "slow".
But on your GoPro, when you get back to the laptop, you upload the recorded 4K video file from the camera.

I just assumed with the level of professionalism of WBD, the cameras have a hard copy of what they film for the live show.
That way, when they get back to the truck, WBD has the High Resolution originals & that version of the video becomes the Final Production copy we see on the Replay.

@mangler or others in the video world would probably tell me that is an impossible task or something that would take a month to mesh.  I try not o bother those guys since I've seen him clipping together the Downhill Southeast videos in the back of his van & it's like watching dude in Matrix reading the zeros & ones.

Maybe we could talk @Sleeper.co into a "POLL" of metal songs to vote on for their next edit?

the live stream is recorded to the final broadcasters internal system, so any weird things you see in the live show will be on the replay. they won't take the time to upload their local recordings unless something major bad happened. export and upload would take too long, they gotta show to wrap.

Can we make a forum thread where people complain about edit music, its guaranteed every single time sleeper post something that isnt 20-40 year old generic rock and metal. Let sleeper be a creative.

As a big metal guy, this slaps.

I agree. I wouldn’t listen to a single song Sleeper has used on my own, BUT, they’ve all worked great in the edits.

Edits are also a demonstration of the production’s team art and vision. Constantly nagging on music choice is a criticism of this and gets old.

This can def go into race talk or something larger so people dont miss it being a finished event thread.

This would end up as the nail in the coffin for those who have defended WBDs decisions thus far.

If they can read the room at all, no way they go through with that chopping block.

Jackson Goldstone makes me think of Hampton in the cartoon movie "Over the Hedge" when they feed him the energy drink.

Only Active racers to have tamed the BlackSnake are Amaury (2), Gwin (4), Laurie (1), Hart (1).
Retired winners - Minnarr (1), Atherton (1)

Finals Thoughts:
Goldstone has won 4 of the last 5 World Cup's entered & 5 of 12 total.
That's an Elite Category winning ratio of 42%

Flats: With Fearon absent, anyone on the circuit (sponsored or privateer) a full time flats racer?

Sam HIll ripping VDS on flats in the duff was so iconic.
It dawned on me that most of the pre-show SUCKS because WBD isn't attempting to license any highlight footage.
We saw ZERO historical flashbacks. ZERO comparison videos to years past. ZERO prior successes or disasters.
How do you get an audience excited if you have no imagery or nostalgia in your sport.
So not only are they trying to erase our records by ripping away our sport specific podium & quoting made up stats for their podium, they're tossing our memories of the sport on a shelf.

Team Points...where do I find em? Whose won the team category each of the last 10 years?

You can see team points per race and team standings by going to the "Race Hub" for any of this year's races.  Here's the Race Hub page for the next DH race:

Wait for the page to fully load and you'll see a box that lists all the races for this year. It also has links for prior years back to 2017. If you want to see current standings, click on "Results and Live Timing" for the most recently completed race and select the "Teams" tab in the box that opens. For end of year standings, choose the final race of the year, obviously.

Assuming it's because those teams haven't actually scored any points. So no need to list them with a fat 0 beside their name?

I wonder if either Pivot didn't "officially" add Roger Vieira to their team or UCI simply didn't process whatever's necessary in order to recognize him in time to have his points contribute to their standings in the team rankings. On UCI's MTB World Series page Roger isn't shown with a team affiliation.

[Edit: Now I'm thinking that Roger's status might be that of a "guest rider" with Pivot, since his addition to the team occurred outside the transfer period. I don't know if points earned by guest riders are added to the team's points total. The UCI regulation 4.18.001 seems to indicate that a guest rider is limited to riding no more than 2 races for a team.]

That would be a huge bummer if Pivot added a guest rider and don't get their points. They are the only gravity world series team with 0 points right now.

My guess is that the UCI's position might be that a "guest rider" is not a "registered" member of the team. If so, this regulation would probably apply (and, again, I'm not sure that Roger's considered a "guest rider"):

"4.11.019 A team standing is drawn up for each round of the UCI Downhill World Cup. Only riders registered in a UCI MTB WORLD SERIES TEAM or a UCI MTB TEAM can score points for their team in accordance with the team standing table in article 4.11.020.."

[Edited because I quoted the wrong regulation.]

One would think this was the whole point of the "Development Team" and "Guest Rider" designations. They are being brought up to race for the team. What other reason would a team have to do this if they didn't get the points? Teams need to field 1 rider per race, or they lose the World Series Team status, but that's not how the rules are written :

"UCI MTB WORLD SERIES TEAMS can select one rider from their development team to compete at a UCI World Cup within the maximum of 4 riders per race per category."

and

"Guest rider: In addition, a UCI MTB WORLD SERIES TEAM will have the opportunity to request to the UCI for 1 rider to be able to race at two UCI World Cup events within the season in either Elite, Junior or under 23 categories. This can be done outside the transfer period."

When a baseball team calls a guy up from a farm team, or an F1 team needs to fill a seat for a single race, or ditto NASCAR, those teams are doing that because the team gets all the benefits. In the case of cars, the team gets the points. So again, why have these rules for adding riders if the team doesn't actually get the points?
