Slopestyle Riders Boycott Crankworx Rotorua Because of Low Prize Pay, Lack of Appearance Fee

If I was capable of riding slopestyle, I'd hit Nabisco up for sponsorship and reference this thread! 

Actually children, Nabisco used to be a sponsor of team GT and the American national series… then a bunch of idiots started diluting mountain biking with sideshows and splitting the racing disciplines into separate venues, and now it’s pretty unlikely you will ever see real corporate sponsorship in American racing ever again.

Many of old folks remember when the US national series was broadcasted on the Outdoor Life Network. We had a lot of corporate sponsors like Visa, Sobe, etc... The TV broadcast dried up, and the big time sponsorship money went with it.

agree. No one is entitled to a living because they like what they do, A living comes from the value the task brings to the world. Wer all love ridng bikes, we are all amazed when the best in the world show case their skills but realistically watching someone do tricks of a jump brings nothing more than a thrill. There is no real value to this other than entertainment. The number of riders in the riding population who have talent enough to even attempt some of these things is extremely low. Slope style brings very little value overall.   These riders are not entitled to appearance fee. They will choke their own sport. 

All those corporate sponsors didn't go away. The advertising pot of gold was re-distributed to thousands of new found outlets to market directly to the desired market when the internet took off.

Besides, the money driven in to MTB at that time was on the wave of X Games & the word X-treme.

PRESS RELEASE: Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA) and Crankworx

The Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA) and Crankworx have reached an agreement with the male athletes, allowing the men’s Slopestyle World Championship to take place as planned for the remaining 2024 FMB World Tour Season. After having the time to meet for a series of conversations, it became evident that the FMBA, serving as the sport’s governing body, the athletes, and Crankworx as the series organizer, share unified and aligned goals, and are working together to ensure the sport’s sustainability, and making the SWC events more accessible for upcoming riders.

After withdrawing from the Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship (SWC) event in Rotorua, the male Slopestyle athletes, the Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA) and Crankworx have forged an agreement. Both male and female riders will be participating in the upcoming Crankworx Cairns Slopestyle event scheduled for May 26, 2024, as well as the remaining SWC events of this season.

These discussions facilitated the identification of underlying issues and concerns on both sides which have been addressed in a collaborative and productive manner. As a result, a consensus was reached that not only addresses the immediate needs of the athletes but also places a strong emphasis on the long-term viability and sustainability of Slopestyle as a sport.

A foundational baseline established by the FMBA and Crankworx early in these negotiations was the commitment to gender equality: all agreements reached with the male athletes are to be extended to the female athletes, also ensuring their perspectives and requirements were considered throughout the process.
 

The lack of transparency is a real bummer. Leaving space for speculation from fans and potential sponsors is a… slippery SLOPE. 

I vote all crankworx riders should start asking for compensation for being in the "show". Let's see how far they can push it until crankworx goes the way of world supercross...

Just pay 2k prize money down to 16th.Then all the the I Don'T GEt paiD FoR  shoWiNG uP tO worK crowd can go back to shouting at people who drive 'wrong'.

Crankworks and Warner Bros are not non-profit, they generate revenue from the athlete's performance. It's up to both parties to define what is the value. Promoters probably want to pay as little as possible and athletes as much as possible. it might take a bit of pushing on each side to figure out the balance. it's healthy that athletes can get unionized to demonstrate their value..
Crankworks could also decide it's not worth the price and not have slopestyle.
I would also argue that Bruni or Minnar extract their value from racing against other racers and if not enough racers can compete, their legitimacy will go down...in the long term, they will suffer if the series are not allowing a fair competition. 

So all the riders can now use the buffet?

Not that we are entitled to know,  but it would be interesting to hear what the final agreement was...

The riders really stuck it to the man. Now they get free tacos.
