Cliff Notes.... This is a for profit entity that exists to provide us with content that is paid for by bike businesses. Due to this business model ,VitalMTB is beholden to protect their partners interests. In some cases it is contractual. In others I would suspect (look up the leaked 12 speed SRAM drivetrain that has popped up online 2 weeks ago as an example) the decision to withhold or remove information is to maintain certain business relationships.

Yikes, that's a lot of conspiracy theory in one thread. Daniel, your post failed to load correctly because of a bug with Instagram embeds. For some reason, when an Instagram post contains smileys, our forum doesn't like it....and so it makes a mess of the post. Sorry guys, no sensationalist censoring going on here, just some good old-fashioned IT issues... Wink

Was the team manager urging them to choose a particular brand he reps?

Aaron Gwin making Money the determining-factor in not riding with Specialized and instead any way the wind blows (so it seems from Team Rumors...) instead replaces any passion with brand quality, rep, performance with the Almighty Dollar.
And, anyone who steps in to to PR work is only protecting cash on hand. There's no other logical explanation for this shifty stance and uneasy relationship with social media. Aaron Gwin is a greedy bastard.
Must be a Mormon.
Fuck me, I was worried my comment was too transparent..... I'll dumb it down. DID FABIEN BAREL TRY AND MAKE THE LAPIERRE TEAM WEAR THE BRANDS...

DID FABIEN BAREL TRY AND MAKE THE LAPIERRE TEAM WEAR THE BRANDS HE REPS (URGE!) AS CONDITION OF JOINING CANYON?

Just as a disclaimer, none of that was in reference to gwin.

From Pinkbike:

"Gwin's personal sponsors are Alpinestars clothing, Red Bull, Troy Lee Design helmets, Giro shoes, HT pedals, Smith Goggles and KTM motorcycles."

So there was at least some truth in the rumors.

Onza Tires? TRP brakes? They seem a little odd for a guy that's trying to maintain his #1 status. I have no personal experience with either but I'll be interested to see how things shake out.

Not really - KTM is an add on to Red Bull and hasn't changed compared to 2015

TRP brakes seemed odd to me as well.

Onza tires on the other hand are fantastic tires, both in sticky race compounds and harder compounds that last beating after beating. I'd buy Onza a million times over before buying another set of Schwalbe's (having already given them 3 sets worth of my money).

This really had to be a money grab, going with TRP brakes (which i've heard of for the first time now), considering he DNF-ed in Leogang at the world champs due to brake problems. And wasn't that one of the reasons for him going with Sram drivetrain and brakes when going to Specialized?

The bike has a Sram derailleur, but they don't list Sram as a sponsor. Any insight into how that works out? Is it part of the YT deal?

From the YT Mob page
"The race bike setup differs only slightly from the stock bike: Grips, brakes and tires come from ODI, TRP and Onza, while the rest of the components correspond to the stock specs. A race bike out of the box."

Might just be my opinion, but given that this man is the biggest name in downhill racing, this was the biggest rumor of the offseason, and YT themselves having a pretty creative marketing team, this press release seems really half assed. All the hype (especially in this forum) and time this team has had to form, they make it seem like this was thrown together last minute. Even the sponsor choices themselves seem like they were just sprinkled in. I'm not impressed. Really makes it seem like Gwin was walking down the grocery aisle looking for the most expensive contracts to put in his cart. Must be sleeping on some silk sheets these days...

In light of what he said in his interviews and all that its more like your comments seem half assed. Dudes pulled off a big move with not much time.

Ethirteen have really pulled off a big move here.
I'm blown away DT-Swiss aren't the wheels considering they held up the way they did during that amazing run he had.

If you read the pinkbike release they said that Whitely purchased Shimano and SRAM. Gwin's will run whatever he feels will be best for the paticular track.

No really they said that the bikes pictured are not what they will be riding and a full release will be out soon when they show up at a race. I am going to go ahead and say they will be using whatever is offered with the YT bikes. Or if Gwin has a preference they will just "buy" whatever drivetrain they need. It's only a couple grand to have the team rig fully stocked with shifters, chains and derrailierus for the season.

Good for the both of them and I wish them well.

Aaron Gwin impresses me more and more with these in depth interviews. With his mental and physical approach to riding and racing, it's not surprising that the guy is on top so often. So balanced and measured but focused and determined at the same time.

It's going to be interesting to watch his results unfold this year. I hope the mental downtime that he missed out on this off season due to having to negotiate all of these new deals doesn't burn him out as the season rolls on, especially since it has a high chance of not being completely smooth sailing for him this season with so many new pieces of kit, new people etc to get used to.

I'm going to guess it won't be a Gwin white wash this year, which is a good thing for us spectators I guess.

In fairness they have nearly an 8 month off season. Thats a pretty long off season for any professional sport not sure how you would get burnt out tbh they have it good. I know they work hard but lets be honest off for 8 months then race 8 races over 4 months pretty sweet deal compared to other sports.
