Do they give details about where the extra drag comes from, or is it just some vague hand-waving without evidence? I would have thought eCVTs would be less draggy than a Pinion MGU, but I guess we'll have to see how the execution plays out. Unclear about mass, but it seems like a lot of folks here were keen on getting rid of rear axle mass in favor of BB mass, and this would do that. I had the same bike but with blue paint, also with a Mr. Dirt fork, MRP chainguide, Azonic stem, and Gazzoloddi so this is a real trip down memory lane! I think that frame is probably from right around 1997-98. The 1996 bikes had shorter upper links, with the shock mounting right in the middle of the link, so they only had around 6" of travel. The front brake/rear brake thing really comes down to terrain and riding style, but mostly terrain. There are trails where it's easier for me to accidentally make my rear tire skid, and other trails where it's easier for me to accidentally make my front tire skid. If grip is good on a trail, my weight is typically going to shift forward when I brake, loading the front tire and creating grip there while unloading the rear. Crown Land, which is provincially managed public land and makes up 90% of the land in BC. This is the land that gets logged, mined, and recreated on. Logging on private land is much less common and tends to happen on Vancouver Island for some reason.

I agree about the unavoidability of Strava, but I drew a different conclusion about how to respond to that reality. Instead of working extra hard to hide the trail, keep it secret, and try to avoid people who use Strava from finding out about a trail, I think illegal trail building should be built in such a way to anticipate, plan for, and hope for people to find out about the trail. The question should be: if this trail is going to be discovered by the authorities no matter what, how can I build it so that it's worth maybe...

My first day on a dh bike that I owned the rear brake failed on the lift. Fine in the lot, absolutely nothing and immediately to the bar. I honestly didn’t think about riding the lift back down so I ride the first lap like that. And the second. Finished the day like that. Sunday River in Maine so it was all tech, mostly damp and tons of rocks and roots. As a bigger dude, dragging the rear doesn’t really do much so I usually go through 4 sets of front pads per every 3 rears.

So theres a few things - Most riders, even the best ones spend for more time on the rear brake so it will get hotter faster, and this only gets more pronounced on steeper/faster tracks. The terrain is a lot more uneven and loose which makes it tricky to apply maximum front brake for every corner, plus a rider can shift their weight backwards much more than a car or motorcycle can. The other thing is polymers have a non-linear relationship between load and friction, which means there are diminishing returns to loading the front wheel under braking. ie if...

What do you mean amplify. Weight transfer gives you more grip. It only makes sense to have more braking power (i.e. bigger rotor) in the front. QED: literally every car on the road. If it has a rear weight bias (Porsche for example) or a near 50 50 split, the difference front to rear is smaller, but still present.
