TheKaiser Added a reply to E-bike talk: not tech rumor derailment
1/27/2025 11:52pm I had seen another article on the Porsche project, and did some digging on euro websites, and the impression I got is that Fazua will remain as the mid-power offering, whereas the Porsche motor will be a no-holds-barred full power model. In addition, the info I saw suggested that Fazua motors would continue to be sold to any brand who...

CascadeComponents Liked a reply to forum topic Bypass tubes on mountain bike shocks or forks? (Trophy truck tech)
1/27/2025 11:22pm Was sitting here thinking about bypass shocks and it occurred to me that there is one fundamental difference between external bypasses that essentially have a check valve and internal bypasses where holes or grooves are used to bypass fluid. With the spring backed check valve design on external bypasses, it takes some amount of minimum pressure for the valve to open so at low speeds 100% of fluid flow would still be through the piston. With holes or grooves there is always a component of fluid flow that bypasses the piston regardless of shock speed.

TheKaiser Added a reply to Bypass tubes on mountain bike shocks or forks? (Trophy truck tech)
1/25/2025 3:29pm Just to add to the list of historic shocks/forks that used similar tech (similar being position sensitive, although not necessarily with external bypass tubes), I think the Mr. Dirt inverted forks from around the year 2000 used what he called a "Triple Bypass" and later "Quadruple Bypass" system. From what I understand, it was a series of holes, similar to...

1/25/2025 1:46pm Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about this sounding a lot like the XD-15s, which I keep hearing have incredible durability, even on things like all weather commuters exposed to winter road salt. When I saw this headline, I'd thought hopefully "maybe someone else is coming out a with a lower priced version of XD-15" but it turns out the opposite is the case.

TheKaiser Added a comment about bike check 1994 Sonoma Crosstrac
1/25/2025 1:22pm I remember drooling over these bikes back in the day, while reading MBA. It's very cool to see one still in such good shape. Are you or your daughter actually planning to ride the bikes regularly, or are these going to be showroom pieces for both of you?

1/10/2025 2:20pm As Primoz just said, clearly its being sideloaded. In addition to that, it might have to do with the surface finish on the inside of the master cylinder body. In the huge volume of discussion of the Shimano wandering bite point phenomenon, I saw it pointed out that Shimano master cylinder bodies are bare aluminum, while the claim was made...

1/2/2025 3:49pm Yeah man, I don't know what I was thinking! I have seen brakes that have little signs of fluid weeping from the vent hole in the membrane cover, and I had thought some manufacturers might have been incorporating a sort of pressure relief hole into the rubber membrane. On further consideration, I guess they all probably just had membrane failures...

12/30/2024 6:47pm I have no experience with the Radic brakes, but just wanted to chime in to say that, for all brake manufacturers, it would be a boon for both the consumer and the seller if they could: A: Deliver or suggest a bleed kit that will seal reliably under vacuum, and B: Design their brake so that the reservoir bladder/membrane (and...

12/28/2024 8:59am That is a wild story about the steaks but I can totally see that happening after noticing little dots on my shirts whenever I'm cooking something in oil that sizzles, and seeing the little wet specks all over the stove area. That is a good thing to keep in mind for whenever I get back into the campervan life, as...

12/28/2024 8:54am No, I've never seen those before, and while we're talking about new MTB brake brands, I forget if we've already discussed these new HEL brakes earlier in this huge thread? https://www.bikemag.com/industry-news/hel-advocate-mountain-bike-brake They claim some sort of special caliper fluid channel and piston design, but I'm unsure if that is just regular brake design that their marketing department is jazzing up...
TheKaiser Added a comment about feature Shorter Cranks - Are They for You?
12/17/2024 5:31pm Look buddy, I wasn't trying to argue with you, we are actually in violent agreement as far as I can tell. I am as big an advocate as anyone for objective, scientific, testing, and I get pretty irritated with "feel" based reviews when they attempt to draw broader conclusions from a highly subjective sensation. I've enjoyed and found many of your posts to be very informative, and I know you appreciate the scientific method, as much as me. But I'm sure we both understand how difficult it is to get statistically significant test results in an off-road environment. I was...

TheKaiser Added a comment about feature Shorter Cranks - Are They for You?
12/17/2024 12:18pm Putting aside the issue of citations, etc... While I agree with you about being cautious about generalizing when comparing studies in road cycling settings to MTB contexts, when it comes to crank length, I've always felt that "The Research"😉 was pretty applicable to MTB. My thinking on that is that crank length has been tested in both max output and steady state pedaling settings and, if anything, road cycling is a better, nearly variable free, test of the effect of crank length on pedaling power output and efficiency. Where that might not translate to MTB would be if short cranks...

12/10/2024 7:41pm Yes, decoupling between chainring and crank is ultimately the key for PK reduction/elimination. I have not had the opportunity to examine the inner workings of any of these motors. Does the pedal power go through the motor, or directly to the chainring? In other words, is the motor upstream of the crank, which is upstream of the ring, or is...

12/10/2024 2:22pm The early DJI reviews definitely talked about a rattle, but I was basing my claim on a statement made in a review of the Amflow from October which claimed they have updated the motor already, to eliminate the rattle, although there is no mention of the method used (https://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/electric-bikes/amflow-pl-carbon-pro-review): " While DJI and Amflow are new to the bike market...

12/10/2024 2:00pm I had not seen that video, thanks for posting it! I saw an earlier post in which you asked about my source for the "decoupling" claim. That vid you found is actually more detailed than anything I have seen, but every launch article on the CX motor seemed to mention it. From the Vital article when the new Gen 5...

12/5/2024 8:18pm I'm not quite sure about that man. Building the motors with looser tolerances may exacerbate the noise and resonance of the rattle, but fundamentally the rattle is caused by the chain flailing around and repeatedly engaging the motor clutch. It's somewhat akin to how some wheels will make a lot of noise when you ratchet pedal. Maybe tighter (and higher...

12/5/2024 7:57pm Yeah, with the ep801, it has enough torque and power to make some gentle uphills feel like gentle downhills. You can turn small bumps into little step-up jumps, etc... In other words, its a lot of fun! I was just posting on the the Pink site about this topic, as I've been somewhat confused about these power calculations. I've seen...

12/4/2024 4:01pm OK hookem34, the PB article just dropped on the Forbidden/DJI bike. Clearly you know more than you were letting on. I know there's probably a carefully planned trickle marketing campaign planned but, fess up, what are the deets? I want travel and weight figures at minimum!😉 P.S. That seems like a real coup for Forbidden to be the first 3d...
TheKaiser Added a reply to What is going on with Thibault Dapréla?
12/4/2024 3:38pm Yeah man, while I am a big proponent of the presumption of innocence (which I don't think is necessarily the case in all Euro countries), Masip's account on Pinkbike was pretty brutal, and doesn't really leave any room open for a claim of a "misunderstanding" or "poor communication" in a semi-consensual setting. Her account sounds more like there's a straight...

12/4/2024 3:10pm That's very true, the ride of the bike overall is really the key thing, and it would be a mistake to get crappy bike just because it has a top notch motor on it. Having said that, I am very much looking forward to when we have "Full Power" bikes at "SL" bike weight, and the DJI motor/battery (and also...
