You can find the amount of dissolved gas in any fluid by looking up a table of the Ostwald coefficient for that particular fluid. Mineral fluid has 10% from my memory. Most liquids have about 10% dissolved atmosphere in them at STP. Mixing fluids, almost like that of bleeding brakes can increase the dissolved gas in a system until the liquid has had time to reach atmospheric equilibration. Degassing is critical in many industries even those that deal with fluid pressures well over 200ksi, Chromatography for instance. Dissolved air is not in-compressible, oil isn’t either but it’s isothermal compressibility coefficient...

If they are pumping up on rapid pulls but work consistently otherwise, as a general rule, it could be due to 2 different causes. 1. If the pumping up is taking you from an excessively long lever throw to a normal one, that is usually due to a poorly maintained brake that is low on fluid and/or has excessively worn pads, and/or has stick caliper pistons. Basically, the system is at a point where a single lever pull can barely generate enough fluid volume to activate the brake fully, so you need to "stack" multiple pulls on top of each...

Update on the Lewis levers. I contacted all Lewis dealers and none were able to offer parts. I sent an email to the Lewis factory in China and they're willing to sell the parts. All of the small parts combined for both brakes cost 108$+30$ express shipping to Finland. I have no clue how long the actual shipping time will be but hopefully I can test the setup soon. Since the Lewis levers have the same size bearings as TS, the bite point adjuster can be retrofitted to Trickstuff levers by either swapping the part that the pushrod screws into...

Wowza what a thread to read! Found it yesterday… and read it all yesterday! Learned a good bit. Soaked in as much as I could. Figured I’d hop in at some point. Been eager to get some better brakes finally. Have been on Code RSCs for a good handful of years. Have always gone the extra mile with degassing and honestly spend longer doing the degas on syringes than I do on the whole rest of the bleed. Gives me a good crisp bite and have both Galfer Wave and Shark rotors with MTX Gold Pads. Have found the Galfer+...

So one thing I've noticed on Hayes is that if you run your pads until they're done (1.75mm thick inc. backer plate), the free stroke gets longer. Doesn't matter if you rebleed (with bleed block), reseat pistons, etc., there's just a turning point somewhere where the pad thickness gets thin enough that the rollback makes the free stroke longer. Conversely when you put very thick fresh pads in, even with pistons fully retracted, the free stroke is shorter. It got me thinking, would running 2.3mm thick rotors help at the end of pad life situation? The alternative would be doing...

About 6 pages back I had talked about my trick to reduce dead throw. This was exactly it, I was planning on writing up a power point with instructions but after spending some time up in the sierras with this done, I would highly advise against it. My understanding is that is disrupts the port timing of the reservoir and the piston. The issue that I had was the brakes would feel great but as they would heat up the throw would get less and less and less until the pads were clamping on the rotors without and input from...

Another person speaking out of their ass and doing no research lol. The internals of the brake are definitely different than Trickstuff, they have their own patents on the brake too. Yes they definitely took some design cues on how the lever looks but internally it's not a copy. Pretty amazing we can get a brake of this quality for under $500 but of course you still have people looking for something to complain and argue over.

I am reviewing the Lewis LHT front and rear brake with the lewis 200 mm front rotor and a 180 mm rotor in the back I am also running the Lewis brake pads. I weigh 186 lbs. Full disclosure I paid full MSRP for these brakes. I placed an order for the bleed funnel, rotors and front and rear brakes. They arrived at my door from China in 11 days. They were packaged very nice and in a protective manner. Customer service was great and responded within 24 hours every time. I am running them on an ibis Ripmo AF...

Stoked to see another person happy with the Lewis brakes. Also love to see the racists downvoting any post with the word Lewis in it Everyone I know who's gotten a set has been blown away by the performance, and everyone who seems to dismiss them has never even tried them let alone seen them in person

Cornelius Kapfinger left Trickstuff and went to Intend where he designed the Intend Trinity brakes that look nothing like his old work. Lewis started from the "Loongze" brand who first started getting in the fishing reel business to "compete" with Shimano. Shimano: https://fish.shimano.com/en-SG/product/reels/baitcastsw/a075f00003jz5pn… Loongze: https://www.loongzefishing.com/dbc-b50.html They probably saw the Trickstuff brakes and thought hey we can copy that too! At first they started selling the brakes under the same name of Loongze through AliExpress. By the end of May, 2023 they chose a F1 racer's name since it is and changed their top cap. You can find the Loongze -...

100% on the tapered bleed fitting tip. About a year ago there was a PB interview with one of the Hayes guys, and he said as much in other words. He specifically recommends taking a pair of Knipex and giving the fittings a little bit of extra torque to make sure the bleed fitting tip bottoms out in the bleed port. As soon as I started doing that, my bleeds got way more consistent and stopped getting that infuriating trickle of bubbles when I did vacuum bleeds.

Glycol ether (primary component of dot 4 and 5.1 brake fluid) contains approximately 19% dissolved atmosphere at STP. Most liquids contain some percentage of dissolved atm with alcohols typically containing more. Short of sparging with helium, vacuum degassing is the most effective method of dissolved gas removal. The soda bottle is somewhat different because it is supersaturated with co2 as a method of generating fizzy bubbles. Yes as the pressure is released the gas content decreases but once it’s done or reached is pressure equilibrium there is still 10 percent dissolved atmosphere in the liquid (approx, just guessing on this)...

How do you go about degassing it? Are you just talking about pulling a quick vacuum in a high quality syringe, or do you have some other apparatus and do it for longer? I have heard surprising claims about the amount of dissolved air contained in mineral oil (not sure if this would apply to DOT fluid too) and have always wondered how long it would take to fully purge it. If you think about opening a carbonated soda/water bottle, once the pressure is lowered, the Co2 starts to be released, but it takes quite a while (hours and hours)...

Enjoying the conversation from afar, hoping it twists into more rotor talk. Where are we actually with oversized rotors, why arent we all running 223mm? Spend 50% of my riding trying to find new stuff, low tier 180mm has been great dragging through brush and staying true. Thats my greatest hesitation, what about everybody else?
