First of all, I get that a lot of ad folks are probably not mountain bikers. They're using a toolbox based on things that they think has worked in the past, not necessarily what will work best in this community. Second, their job is to sell products. Building a community where new people feel welcome is probably not on their priority list. Third, as mountain bikers, we have collectively shown that stuff like the old Marzocchi posters and calendars (that were on the walls of service departments I managed) was not only acceptable but preferred. I'm saying all of this...

All good advice thus far. To piggyback, my experience with a Fox 38 was similar out of the box, and a lower leg service seemed to help quite a bit. Don’t be afraid to decrease the pressure in the spring and rely a bit more on LSC and HSC to control the feel of the spring rate.

I love this thread.. and I hate every e-bike review that does not mention the durability and reparability of an e-bike. Current Ebikes support makes me mad!! Ebike is considerably different than MTB. Traditional bikes can be repaired and maintained in an inexpensive way for almost a lifetime. I can still find cheap original parts on eBay for my 1990 mtbs, it's also for the most part compatible with a decent amount of modern components. E-bikes (the motor and battery) are made of components that are difficult or impossible to maintain, there is no public documentation, no third parties parts...

Is there an existing topic (how much reach is too much reach maybe?) covering this or should a new one be opened? Before this topic is offtopiced again. One thing to take note of though... Is anybody taking the backsweep of the bars into account? And to throw some gravel in the mix, when the XC rider crashing is shown, the 'cantilever' stem should prevent that to a greater extent than the zero offset stem as pushing on both sides of the bar with an equal force (being stopped by an obstacle) will want to straighten the bars. So much...

you're right, I guess 31.8 isn't as dead as my phrase made it sound. in my defense, pretty much every bike we review these days shows up with a 35mm cockpit, so sometimes that's what it feels like.

While they are 8 degree back sweep, the angle starts further from the bar center than any other bar I have tried. This gives them less setback for where your hands actually end up, take note when picking a stem length. Compared to OneUp bars cut to the same length, the WAO bars have a 8mm shorter offset from the bar center when measured at the grips. So if you were running OneUp bars and swapped to these keeping the same stem, it would be like running a 8mm longer stem.

As stated already, if the bushings have not been checked correctly, that could easily be the problem and source of "harshness". Some forks have a bushing fit that is so bad it takes quite a bit of effort to push the stanchions to bottom out with no air spring, no damper, seals removed, and lowers clean and dry. I have checked bushings on well over 100 forks; 75% of them are not perfect, and maybe 20% of them are really bad. Especially for a fork like the 38 where the chassis is very stiff, if the bushings fit is bad...

Per the usual, Robot is giving you the best advice here. I'm really doubtful a custom tune or any fork modification will help sort out your issues. When you say "fork isn't smooth", what are you comparing it to? Reason I ask is a 130mm 34 is never going to feel like a longer travel enduro fork. I often ride a 140mm 34 and find the performance to be brilliant but the fork can still feel harsh or lacking of sensitivity at times. With less travel you have to tune for control, not comfort. The only caveat here is there...

Exactly my thought. With marketing at least you get some percentage points of stiffness improvements to back up those claims.

I mean he would say that, wouldn't he. Doesn't he also own the business that imports Pivot bikes into the UK? (Besides owning the Pivot Factory racing team I mean.)

Ride 50 (the older system) was not that popular on mtb's (used on Lapierre and not alot of other brands) though I don't believe they had as much issues with it.

Pivot have jumped the gun with Fazua with the intention to be the first bike out with the system and get ahead of other brands in hope to sell as much as possible. The problem was that Fazua ride 60 system was not really ready for prime time. After some critical updates, including a new (better) remote I hear the system is much more reliable and works better (smoother power delivery). All in all it's a real shame customers are the real testers and the systems are'nt as bullet proof as they should be.

The local Pivot dealer to me has sold 6 of the fancy, schmancy Shuttle SL models, 4 have come back with motor, battery, or both issues. Pivot refuses to help because they don’t produce the parts, so they’re stuck calling the US distro and getting little to no help because as stated, they have zero hands on experience and are just reading off of an incomplete PDF sheet or exploded diagram. So yeah, you’ve got a group of customers with 9-13k near paper weights and the techs have to spend hours upon hours trying this, that, and the other thing.

Motor failures, battery failures, wires pinched in builds because the wire management sucks, bad controllers, bad software, support programs that are super vague. One huge issue currently is in super busy season when you're booking a couple weeks out, is that you now have random ebike stuff come in you have to manage to fit in to the week or you get people calling about how they just dropped 14k on their bike and it's broken, and you know what, that's a fair point. I now have to fit it into my day some how. It could be 10 minutes...

Unfortunatly putting out unfinished/not reliable products is a common practice in our industry. However, for most products the fix/replacment is rather easy and quick and at worst will cost the customer or dealer a few hundred $$ to replace. E systems on the other hand are a whole different story as you dont really have an option to replace them with other brand products.Further more, stocking such parts is crazy expensive even if you get credit as a dealer after it's deemed a warranty. Bike brands will have to really choose wisely what system they use as the aftermath of a crap...

On the Fauza comments, half of the battery's have failed on shop bikes before they're even sold and trek dropped them hard and fast for hub motors. They're software is terrible to update and work with. It's not been great. Honestly, every e-bike system seems like it's just getting into public beta and the first two gens were alpha testing for those who were brave enough. The failure rate at shop level for large shops should be considered embarrassing for the industry and while some of the software available is helpful, everything is different and while you're able to track...

I would always recommend exhausting your tuning options before paying for an upgrade, because for World Cup racers and average Joe's I think suspension is more about setup than $$$ spent. Two things I'd try before upgrading: trying a softer fork spring rate, and if that doesn't feel good, try a softer rear shock spring rate.
