me over here in my poverty spec D4 Polyacrylite that I picked up for $250 bucks that weighs 1130g. I've debated the DOT vs DH certification a few times because of a few of my moto riding buddies will use mtb dh helmets for wood/trail riding up in big bear in the heat of the summer. I'm a bit paranoid and have only done it once and I have to admit, I felt pretty exposed but the 400g of less weight was really nice. I will say that I fail to see the difference between what sort of incidents I...

To be clear, it's not ECE certified. They used the impact forces prescribed by ECE testing as "guidelines" when testing the helmet (to understand their test results and how they relate to such standards), but they did not commit to full ECE certification as that would likely have made it impossible to meet the weight and ventilation goals.

As far as I understand it, the DOT standard in question deals with penetrating impact forces, and so uses a smaller object to hit the helmet with during the testing. I guess the equivalent real-life scenario is "sharp rock edge, high speed". POC spoke about how this standard limits how wide you can make your vents for example (because they will specifically aim the anvils at the openings during this test), and they worked around it by giving the vents rounded edges to promote better air intake while still not exceeding the max vent size, which was hard to do...

Looks really good, has a steep price though.

I believe the ECE and EN certification suggests the helmet does well protecting from low speed impacts while DOT only looks at high speed protection. Getting ECE, EN, and DOT certification into one lid should be pretty safe

Does DOT certification mean it’s safer for your brain, or is it just mean it takes more force to crack the shell? Just like cars with crumple zones, a helmet that gives a little in the right way may be safer than a more rigid structure. I look forward to seeing Virginia Techs testing data.

D ownhill racing has always been dangerous of course, but as the sport progresses, so too does the speed and thus the risk associated with crashes. Modern bikes and the proliferation of lift-accessed riding will also expose amateur riders to the same dangers, outside of the racetracks. We’ve seen protection companies produce helmets that certify to increasingly higher standards, but so far, no brand has managed to really combine features like MTB-specific ventilation and low weight with actual moto-level safety certification – until now, that is. When perusing the specs of the new Barocon Carbon, it seems like business as...

I’ve always loved having thicker grips and have been riding diety supracush for a long time which is a 34mm diameter. I’ve recently created my own grips in an effort to have my own larger grips. Two of these listed in the link are at 36mm and I use a rubber/foam mix to make them. Been riding them all season. https://mtbairgrips.com/collections/grips If anyone wants to try them in exchange for a review lmk or you can also of course buy them. I’m currently working on a silicone injection molded version, to give it a feeling more like the many grips...

I switched from the Edge to the 38, and the difference in lateral stiffness is pretty significant. Of course, the added weight is noticeable too—it took me a little while to get used to it. But I don't notice it anymore, not even on sharper, more technical sections. It goes exactly where I point it, without hesitation Smile

Gobao seem further on that Avinox when it comes to the eCVT and from Eurobike interview they were looking at an early 2027 release to the market. On another forum it was said that they do have established brand(s) on board for that window also. Given that Gobao already supply white label drive systems to Aventon and Hepha it's not beyond possibility one of those brands on board could be Specialized. As soon as Yamaha purchased Brose I always thought Specialized would move away from that partnership ASAP.

For the Avinox system, EMTB review projected not next year but the following, which makes sense since they’re clearly labeling it a prototype/proof of concept.

Little insight I got. July release for yeti Avinox cvt system is not 100% and far out from coming to the market. Apparently issues with the system auto shifting down when rider puts high watts combine with motor. Sounds like System protecting itself. Not sure if this is just a software or the system not being able to handle it. We’ll see. Some high ups in specialized are not happy. A nasty email sent to engineers/ product developers to step it up and motor/gearbox combo bike priority 1 Specialized has an unreleased bike the industry will get to see at...

Riders' goals matter, this is where racing and daily riding for nine-to-fivers diverge. Enduro and DH racers want the fastest speed going down, recreational riders are looking for the best compromise to reduce suffering on the way up. The people I ride with only care about speed when climbing . For descending we want confidence and predictability. Confidence = speed for us. The tire that is fastest descending changes 150 times a year based on the specific trail and the amount of moisture (or complete lack thereof). My ideal tires for a weekday lunch ride on Galbraith flowy stuff are...

It depends on what question you are looking to answer. Race sim will tell you which tire you are faster on. If you want to know about rolling speed of radial Mary vs standard Mary for instance then Chung method can get you some numbers, but it's very difficult to do, especially offroad. Chung method assumes you are accurately repeating, so basically you can't use the brakes and things like that. The Golden cheetah software does have a tool to help with analysis though. The simplest way to compare rolling speed is with a section of trail with a U...
