I own a Vala that I ended up building "Lite-ish": Lyrik instead of 38, Reserve 30 HD (vs. the original DH/HD combos), EXO+ tires, etc. Not quite as light as their Lite build but it does get the weight down to a bit over 47 lbs with pedals. That's damn light for a full power ebike. I weigh <155 lbs so it becomes much more difficult to throw around. My local trails don't have many rocks, and are steep & flowy, and ride better with a lighter, poppier bike. I can and have thrown on a 170mm Zeb & longer...

Personally it comes down to how and where people ride, for me, Rotorua isn’t packed full of rocks and I don’t smash wheels or tires round here even though most of my riding is on grade 5s. I’m on an old gen 9.8 rail at the moment and realistically don’t need a 750 wh battery 95% of the time and the thing is a tank. He is implying that the development of the demo is more seen as marketinf and development of the brand as a whole. And that 6500 price tag on a frame really probably just pays for the high drive, features, plus a little extra margin. It’s not indicative of trying to recoup the incredible amount of money spent to develop the bike. Especially considering they aren’t selling demos by the 1000s let alone 10,000s like they do other models. I wish it was something that made sense to do. The reality is there aren't that many DH bikes out there. To be able to distribute the development costs enough to have a reasonably priced product we'd need pretty much everyone who owns a new Demo to buy something. It would be a fun project no doubt though.

This is one reason I tend to roll my eyes when people talk about slashing the U.S. defense budget. I'm not saying every defense program is a good use of money, spending 2 billion on one jet can be debated, but defense and aerospace spending support more tier 2&3 manufacturing than most people realize. Sure, you might work at a company that doesn't make defense products, but the reason you can get raw materials, machine service, coatings, or manufacturing supplies locally may be because a handful of ma&pa shops in your area stay in business making aerospace and defense parts...

the more ebikes get sold, the more a shop can earn through just replacing the faster wearing parts. set the service interval in the software to 1500-2000km and you have a steady flux of people coming who want the service symbol to be gone again. even easier when financing those bikes. in germany, those contracts come with mandatory service intervals over the whole time the contract runs (usually 3 years).
