4/17/2025 10:11am Exactly, Theres so much that effects balance on a MTB - I mentioned clips vs flats on anther post explaining that often Clip riders(this is heavily mentioned by Pro's) Will ride more ontop of the pedal or even and inturn will weight the front more - purely because flat pedals you have to remind yourself and/or naturally drop the heels. I believe Dak mentioned this in a video at sea otter when discussing high bars..... for the sake of serious discussion: just Whacking on a long rear centre isnt the answer or cure to balance without understanding everything that plays...

4/17/2025 10:09am Yeah the weight bias will be more forward with a softer fork and stiffer rear but wouldn’t that be because the stiffer rear pushes you up and forward and the softer fork pulls you back down and forwards? Personally I’m not a fan of tuning suspension to achieve a certain weight bias and I’d rather have it setup for the terrain and pitch as the former seems to lead to an unbalanced feel.

4/17/2025 9:05am So I just picked up a xl transition spire, with a ratio of 1.9 or so. It corners great, and I couldn’t quite figure out why until I thought about skiing- having that longer reach and fairly long rear end gave me a larger sweet spot to maneuver around in. On flat corners and steep sharp corners it felt easier to move around and get my body weight to the spot where I could hit the most traction.

4/17/2025 9:05am Appreciate the response back! As i feared, all would be smaller sizes. It is a struggle for myself with the preferences I have and being 6'2" on XLs. Very challenging to find much even close to 1.8.

4/17/2025 9:04am Or a 1.9 ratio can also mean a longer front end with the same length rear as a bike with 1.7 ratio. A slack DH frame coupled with a longer reach makes for a really long front center. I think that was the imbalance issue, the bike was long but only in the front if that makes sense. RC was the same as a prior frame, but the front end was much longer.

4/17/2025 9:03am Long time lurker figured I’d chip in. For me at least personally the reason I tend to prefer a longer rear centre as without body position adjustment there is more weight on the front wheel. This lets me stand on my feet more in a neutral position without having to get so far forward to get traction on the front wheel and since there is less weight on the back wheel, it is easier to step the back out in turns. That, coupled with more weight on the front wheel makes cornering feel easier for me and is the benefit...

4/17/2025 9:02am Not gonna lie. I didn't have a good understanding of stack (or ever really paid attention) until this winter when I swapped frames from a 2020 Slayer (xl) to a Madonna V2.2. On the Slayer, I had trimmed the steer tube on my Zeb, but still used a bunch of spacers. On the Madonna, I can barely fit the same stem without any spacers. I'm 6'4 and loved my Slayer, but the Madonna is on another level.

4/16/2025 10:46am Weighting hands sucks. Such a not fun way to ride. I will transfer a little weight to my hands, but I want to ride through my feet. I think the rise in collar bone breaks caused by front wheel wash is caused by this trend in riding (especially when paired with clipless setups that I see as being necessary for...

4/16/2025 10:34am I'll start by pasting my last geo post from the tech thread . "Proportional chainstays" are a marketing gimmick the way that the brands are currently using the term, with the exception of maybe forbidden. How proportional the rear center length is to the front center is 100% relative and not defined. What most people seem to talk about when it comes to "proportional chainstays" is the ballance between front wheel grip and rear wheel grip, or more accurately the weight distribution between the front wheel and the rear wheel. On level ground, a 100 kg rider on a bike...

4/15/2025 5:09pm We do have a location in Portland @seanfisseli I don't think SEA will be a new hub. But GTK on the bike trails. If we were to try something the Portland location would be the most probable test.

4/15/2025 9:54am you really need to look at getting a location in seattle. this is a prime service for any kind of cyclist, and seattle has a really solid gravel/atb scene, and the road trips from seattle into the cascades or the olympic peninsula are incredible. Bend is i think 6 hours away, Mt Hood is 4.

4/15/2025 8:14am 6 year old thread with relevant info. Ninjichor has a solid post in there. They aren’t getting into stack but you’re right, if you want more stack you’ll need more RC. That’s partially where a lot of us are basing our RC religion on. https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/The-Hub,2/Advanced-geometry-nerding,103… I think a lot of us need to spend our time in a thread like...

4/15/2025 8:01am i love you friggin nerds. all bikes are great somewhere. all bikes suck somewhere. get moar bikes. short chainstays are cool. long stays are pretty wild too. dorado FEELS way different to 40. Way. but thats the point right? I feel like santa cruz screwed up by not making bullit "MOST BIGGER" (battery/travel/geo) compared to VALA. but my ebike is a 2stroke. so maybe im way off.

4/15/2025 7:58am As someone who has been on this thread a while I'll say: Leave the banter I feel like this thread does a good job of balancing Tech rumors and general Tech discussion that may seem off topic, of which Crab link is our proudest moment. The banter around the tech is just as important as the tech. If you just want a hot-list of rumors about stuff coming out, then well look elsewhere.

4/15/2025 7:51am I used to be short chain stays. I have the, not bragging, but, let's just say my background includes a little bit of...BMX. loved my Canfield RIOT at 414mm on a 29, pre boost. Now I ride a rigid bike with a 455 rear end on the same trails, faster than I did on the Riot 10 years ago One isn't better than the other, but tastes, preferences, trends, styles change. Not looking to go shorter anytime soon.
