This 100% - peoole get too hung up on single details about a damper without inderstanding it only makes up for a tiny fraction of the performance - you can make almost any damper curve with multiple different valves but some will be easier than others, so each manufacturer will prioritise what they think achieves their specific goals. A "poppet" can be combined with a shimmed main piston to be linear or even progressive, while shims on both can be extremely digressive, there is a lot more to is than the basic valve design. Also "poppet" gets used a blanket...

" If you have a PUSH SV8, and a Fox DHX, it is easier to change the base valve tune on the fully shimmed DHX, and there are many more options available, than the poppet system of the SV8. " The above statement is incorrect when referring to the design and architecture of the two products. It requires similar tools and time to disassemble and reassemble both products and change the base vlave tuning. When it comes to tuning, you also have a similar range of damping characteristics that can be created. With that being said, I now understand that...

Good write up for sure. Kinda reminds me of my golf game. I keep score by "did I have fun?" Birdies, pars, bogeys, lost balls. I don't really care. I love riding bikes. That's what makes me happy. At least me and my bros are out there. That's what matters. And that's all I need.

Good read. I ride for fun now, all rides lead to the pub so regardless I'm having 5 schooners after the ride, any fitness aspects are moot. If I ride my "meat powered" hardtail there is a sense of acheivment, my legs are sore, my ass is sore. The beers are delicious If I ride my 170mm eeb, my upper body muscles are sore, my ass is sore, the beers are still delicious You just choose the right tool for the job that day. If I have nothing on all day I'll ride the hardtail at a leisurely pace and...

Thanks! Funny you mention tubes. I’ve met a lot of riders, especially e bikers, who have just said screw it and gone back to thick tubes. A lot of road riders are also moving toward tpu tubes since they’re lighter and easier than tubeless. At events doing installs this year, the biggest issue I saw with tubeless was the rim tape. After a season or two, it loses stick and starts leaking onces the tire being removed smears the tape. You’re supposed to retape when it looks worn, but even that’s a pain. Most rim tape doesn’t stick very well...

I sent my 40 to Mike Williamson at Aurum Suspension in Montana. He did a great job installing the piston as well as servicing my fork. I also run a Secus and he serviced that as well. Great communication and good turnaround. I would recommend Aurum for sure.

I'm running the podium piston and custom tune on my 40 which I run on my Tues. My reason for trying it was to increase overall support and remove unwanted harshness on high-speed events (roots and square edge) while providing a better balance/match to my Avalanche Woodie/EXT Arma setup (I swap back and forth). I'm very happy with the outcome...

Has anybody had any experience with the WPS podium piston kit for the Fox GRIP2 VVC? Could only find one post online which didn't go deeply into the difference the piston kit makes. Cheers

I just got an ebike and it's blowing my mind. I don't think I was ever an ass about it, but I was certainly a bit judgy before. Now, I get it. For me, it just eliminates the slow, sloggy parts of the ride – it's always cruisy and fun. Plus, the penalty for using reliable, confidence-inspiring parts – beefy tires, big brakes, hefty suspension – is essentially eliminated. Isn't going to replace analog riding for me, it's gonna get me on a bike more, because I don't have to search for motivation when I'm tired, time pressed, or it's...

HUGE thanks for taking the time to post all of this. I may actually understand a decent chunk of it. The speeds-that-actually-matter was a huge help. I've read and got notes about speeds, and what you're saying totally checks out. But I probably would have missed it if you hadn't pointed it out. Again, I think with a little education avid riders could attain a level of understanding that would empower us to call BS on this sort of thing. Doesn't seem all that different from looking at anti-squat curves for different cogs, where a consumer-level understanding of what's going...

Those are all great points I generally agree with, other than I'd say that, to some degree, the points about chasing the perfect setup, Greg Minnaar, and requiring a PHD are straw men. That's not what I'm saying or seeking. I just bought a Lift damper, which doesn't even have a HSC adjuster. You'll never catch me on anything but GX cranks and X01 mechanical (unless I get really convinced Transmission offers much longer chain and cassette lifespans on my mid-powered ebike). I've never owned a frame for less than four years. I'm running 7-yr old Code RSC's on my...

My interest has been spurred by the fact that I never got along with the Charger 3, and the difference in what I got from Rockshox and what I got back from a nationally-known tuner was about as subtle as a frying pan to the face. I was formerly in the camp of "at 210, I'm barely within the range of a stock damper and I should worry about something else." I moved without leaving a forwarding address. I've come to two central conclusions. First, I don't think the people at Rockshox, Fox, etc. aren't as smart as that tuner...

Hayes is having a 20% off sale, so I'm getting Dominions. Was going to order from their site, but my LBS price matched, so stoked about that (don't have to deal with shipping, duty, etc). Once I have a bit of time on them, I'll make sure to do a good review for all the clydes out there. Ha ha

Muscle mass and height can attribute to weight too. I know a lot of riders over 200lbs that are super strong and I’d be surprised if most elite DH or enduro riders over 6ft aren’t close to or over that. I am 210 due to pizza, beer and cake less than gym time, but that’s not everyone.

Not only that, but in the event of the shock hardware coming loose and being ridden, a standard eyelet shock is much less likely to suffer damage over a trunnion shock.

Yea definitely not the worst as it allows for a longer stroke shock in a smaller package but even with perfect alignment, the triangle pattern of the eyelets transmits significantly more frame/linkage flex into shock verses a standard eyelet. Shocks really shouldn’t be a structural element in a perfect design imo.
