A lot of new regarding brakes these past pages. XTR, Mavens, Hope, and now another addition from SRAM I have spotted. Ben Hildred is doing his climbing challenge, where he climbs 10k feet a day, for 100 days, and I spotted him covering up the caliper on his latest story - Strange, because I thought he just ran regular Level Ultimate Stealth's - But went through his old stories from these past climbs, and managed to spot two pics of a caliper, that size-wise looks like a level, but it differs in shape. It also seems to say "Prototype" when...

Just to clarify, that's the gearbox's fault, not the belt. Above 150W or so, belts are more efficient than chains as long as they have proper tension. The belt vs chain efficiency difference is negligible once you throw the 5-10% power loss from a gearbox into the mix.

This is the (Horst) linkage, defining the axle path: This drives the shock: If it's the same colour, it's a single piece. The chainstay of the horst link has an extension, to which the red short link attaches and pulls down on it to rotate the silver rocker, driving the shock.

Easy to come 3rd in the women's Elite when there are only 3 riders (correction 4) in the Elite female field. Bailey came 12th overall in the female field with 7 x U19 and 2 x U17 riders in front.

Well, I’m happy now that I know the modifications weren’t just a placebo effect on grip (thanks to your FEA). I think you nailed it—I wouldn’t have done anything differently. Thoughts and learnings on the mods: At the time, people were asking me if they were safe and reliable. I was confident that I was actually adding reliability by allowing the forged parts to flex and reducing stress risers near the welds (maybe that could be your next FEA project! 😉). I was careful to include large, smooth radii in the machined cuts. Danny had two bikes with these modifications...

I recently got bit buying a new headset for my Megatower. I like to buy stuff used whenever I can, so I was buying an IS41/52 headset off a guy, taken out of a Yeti IIRC. Well, it shows up and the top headset bearing doesn't fit into my upper IS cup in my frame. Too big. I take out the headset and the side of the bearing says "41.8mm," but googling that headset size gets me nowhere. Turns out IS42 headsets actually measure 41.8mm in diameter, but apparently "41.8" is too confusing when there's already a 41mm size. So...

This. Please everyone just ride it before you speak of drag. Based on what I read in internet forums, I would never buy one. It makes all the sense to me, but all I hear on the internet is "drag" and that you can't shift while pedalling. Then I got to ride one.. I haven't noticed any increase in drag compared to my Demo with half a day of riding on it in the park. I'd say if I don't lube a chain every day, there's more drag in that system, especially when the Saint wears out in 3 months...

People assume way too much about gearboxes and belts. Do not judge until your ride one. The reports you read about the drag or gripshift appear to be mostly from people who haven't ridden a gearbox bike and are just repeating what they heard. I have a gearbox bike with a belt drive, 155mm cranks. Full suspension with idler and tensioner. So lots of added "drag" beyond the gearbox itself. It's a big enduro bike that gets used for bike parks and shuttle laps too. I've beat it to hell and back for the last 3 years, broken frames, bent...

Yes, something else is happening. All of the following is a guess, but I think a pretty good one. Gates, a company already well known for Motorcycle belts and that according to google, has $830m in revenue but has only dabbled in cycling in the fringes for years is saying LFG. They likely want in on the E-bike market as mixed motors/drivetrains evolve and full power E-bikes ditch derailleurs because lets be honest, traditional drivetrains just don't hold up as well under an e-bike mashing, and they know DH is going to test the to the limits. This is going...

It’s wild that Big Belt is pumping this up while it’s the gearbox aspect that’s way more interesting. Pinion has to be hyped!

Disappointing to see there are still teams willing to support Daprela after what he is alleged to have done. There are a ton of other riders without teams that are almost as fast and come with none of the baggage. I would've thought sponsors would prefer their riders to be fast and good human beings, rather than just fast.

Yeah, they'll do a great job dialing in compliance, I’m sure of it. They appear to have the resources to alter the bike for both riders preferences and make a stiff bike for Greg and maybe a less stiff bike for Danny. Sometimes it’s not about finding the “right” stiffness for the bike but what the rider believes makes them faster. If a rider believes a stiffer chassis suits their strengths and will help them go faster, then make it stiffer. If they’re happy with the setup and they are correct, they usually ride faster even if it goes against...

Danny Hart's GT Fury caught a lot of attention this past World Cup season as it had some notable structural frame modifications to increase compliance. Dale, Danny's mechanic, is a veteran frame engineer and had some great ideas on how to fine tune Danny's bike to work best for his style and to eke out the literal hundreths of a second needed to win races. If you haven't seen these mods, check out this quick section of Vital's PIT BITS video here. Let's dig into each modification. This will be extra fun because I was fortunate enough to be the...

From an industry perspective Enduro is almost ubiquitous for a few reasons: 1. They offer a lot of bicycle-specific sizes that can be very hard (and relatively expensive) to source elsewhere. They are one of the few suppliers with a wide range of max complement small bearings. Max complement is a big improvement in load capacity for the specific use case of suspension pivots (high dynamic load, low rotation speeds). 2. They are well known and have lots of international support for people replacing bearings. Go try replacing all the bearings on a Pivot Firebird with NTN equivalents. You might...
