3/14/2026 11:13am I would say no because you can get an optimal geometry (bar height, TT length, etc.) for all riders easier when you do not have to deal with packaging issues for being able to fit larger wheels into a XS frame.

3/14/2026 11:13am Counter argument: all sports that heavily rely on equipment have pretty strict rules around that equipment. I mean even if you just stay in cycling: different wheel sizes are different classes in BMX, road bikes are 28" and time trial bikes are heavily regulated but with an eye to accommodate small and tall riders.

3/14/2026 11:12am Not sure if you're trying to compare cycling to motorsport or ball sports but one of these things is not like the other when it comes to equipment. In DH the GOAT is 6'2" and the possible next GOAT is 5'8".

3/13/2026 5:00pm Haha oh god, and then cycling became the next NBA. I do appreciate that mountain biking by and large doesn’t seem to be a sport that favors a certain body type and would hate for that to change

3/13/2026 4:49pm What happens for small riders who hit the hard limit on stack with a 100mm fork and a 32in wheel? Reduce the travel? Drop stem so low their chin is on the top cap? Maybe this won’t be an issue in practice but I’d like races not to be decided by how someone was born and what equipment they can reasonably use because of that.

3/13/2026 4:27pm I’d hanker a guess that most of us here have zero problem with 32 on gravel, rigid mtb, hardtails, and XC race bikes but we’re very wary of it going into disciplines with travel above those. Some of us got bamboozled by 150mm+ 29ers only to have to buy new bikes yet again to get the handling we want out of a mullet bike. We’re tired boss. Our bikes handle really good and we don’t need or want them to be faster. (non racer obv)

3/13/2026 4:25pm This is what companies want. You need a new bike bag, a higher price train ticket, a new car, and a new house for your new 32” bike. The Consumerism dream.

3/13/2026 10:19am I just read through this thread and wanted to bring up a few points I haven't read yet. This is kinda nerdy, but I believe this is the place for it. There's a widespread idea that the bigger wheels accelerate slower due to a higher moment of inertia, but what is forgotten is larger wheels don't need to rotate as quickly due to their larger circumference (and therefore a lower RPM at a given speed). While there is a real overall increase in mass from a bigger wheel/tire which will impede acceleration; it's not because the wheel is getting bigger...

3/13/2026 7:24am Trick and style-wise, Tommy G is the Marc Johnson of mtb hotdogging. I’ve never seen him do anything wack and he’s looked good the whole time. The guy is so sick. *alcoholism and shady ethics aside I hope

3/13/2026 7:23am In a scenario where 32" wheels turn out to be a clear competitive advantage for racing and become dominant in XCO, the UCI will have no choice but to ban them for race use, or relegate them to their own separate class. Smaller riders don't have access to the full range of advantages of the larger wheelsize and 32" wheels would therefore facilitate a disproportionate and unfair advantage for larger riders.

3/12/2026 7:48am Actually my current bike is set up mullet and I don’t mind that most of the time. I’d like to try out a smaller front wheel, but do enjoy the extra plowing ability the 29 gives me when trying to keep up with longer travel friends. When I was talking about keeping a 27.5 wheel straight, I was more referring...

3/11/2026 11:06pm 32" is going to be quite the interesting journey with challenges along the way. Tray style hitch racks will have the bikes hanging well outside a lot of side mirrors. Sizing, these may not be able to fit all riders. I have heard that bikes have been drawn up that will fit all the way down to current 29er fitments. Beyond that, geo gets funky in trying to make happen. Unfair advantage? In current gravel/XC, everyone is on equal wheelsizes for the most part. Bike boxes. These are already challenging to ship at a reasonable rate. It is going to...

3/11/2026 11:02pm At 6 foot 4 I have no idea why ppl keep saying big wheels are good for taller riders. The terrain you are riding on doesn't get bigger ?? Il fight you all day on stack height not being proportional , but it’s getting better and it’s fixable with the new crop of 80mm plus bars. Big wheels dont help bigger ppl, buy a bigger , longer frame ??? And enjoy the riding the trail rather than steam rolling it ?

3/11/2026 10:52pm As someone 5' 9" who test rode a full 29er once, experienced tire buzz, and never rode a full 29er again (other than hardtails) I can confidently say that I will never own a full suspension bike with a 32" wheel. I struggle enough with manuals and some last second jumps on my mullet bike. 29 rear and 32 front for me, and millions of other "average" sized riders would pretty much be a strictly wheels-on-the-ground affair, and that sounds about as fun as watching paint dry, compared to the actual mountain biking we do on a regular basis. For...

3/11/2026 10:59pm I’m sure I will catch flack for this and don’t want to make sweeping generalizations, but if the chainstay thread is anything to go off of, it would seem that a lot of vital posters genuinely don’t seem to understand why someone would want a “playful” bike. It felt a bit like trying to explain why a manual transmission sports...

3/11/2026 10:39pm Had a shower thought today: Us “normal” sized folks (size M and L) have fetishized the 27.5 front wheel for being more nimble and playful, so why are so many tall riders so stoked about 32? Wouldn’t a giant human on a 29er be in the total sweet spot of it feeling nimble like a full 27.5 bike feels to us but also with the better rollover of a 29? Am I just in the Vital/PB bubble of liking the handling of full 27.5?
